Tyre Wear

After getting 7 months wear out of my Bridgestone 019 front and 020 rear, I have decided to stick on a set of Pilot Powers all round. Other than some weird pulsating effect coming from the front end (flat spot? tyre not perfectly round? suspension all cocked up?) they seem fine.

As I didn't take note of the kays when I stuck my last set of Bridgeys on, I dunno how many kays I got out of them. I thought i'd start this thread to record the date fitted and replaced, number of kays when new and when used and type of tyre fitted. I'll put my details for these tyres here now and update them when I've finished with them. Feel free to use the thread for the same thing.

Notes: Scalloped quite badly. Never had this problem with Bridgestones, but I'll try another Power and see how I go. Seem to take longer to warm up than the 020's but plenty of confidence in them once you get used to how they feel. Probably had another couple of hundred km's left in them, but my brother is borrowing my bike for the weekend and I don't want to risk him dropping it because of very worn tyres.

Notes: OK, so 11,000 kays out of a front aint bad, but the Power I just replaced will be the last Michelin to ever go on my bike!!

From new the bloody thing wobbled. At first I thought it was suspension settings or something but then I worked out it was the tyre itself. I rang Michelin about it, as it was obviously some problem with the construction, and they basically told me that it was stiff shit. Hardly the sort of service I'd expect from such a large company, but probably what I would have expected from a French organization.

I'm more than happy to piss the bloody thing off, even though it had plenty of tread left on it(as you can see).

As long as your not doing any clutch up wheelies, you should get at least 6000km's or so out of them as I have seen 2 sets on different bikes R6 & R1 that have done abit of fast weekend stuff & a few trackdays yet look fine.
My back tyre on the other hand has about 2500km's & would be stuffed by 3500km's from too many clutch up wheelies.
But that isn't any worse than the old Pilot Sports I use to run, yet the Powers give heaps more traction/confidence.

well, here is the data outta my personl "zx6r History" file i have on my baby (just a word doc that lists all the costs of oil changes, services, tyres, dates etc...)

anyway, these bridggies have been superb, but they are slicks atm and i've just past 42,2xx Kms (so, roughly 6000 Km.s... pretty average) they were replaced as a set and have gone as a set (front/rear) one to one ratio. prolly wanna try the michilins next as i want a few more kays outta a 600 machine.... and i can hear Brett before he posts, "well, if you did less monos and stoppies mate...." where's the fun in that?!

Wd love to know where to get a pair of tyres for $340, it cost me $280 just for a rear (Perelli Dragon GTS - 108/55/17).

However, as I'm not a complete hoon but commute to and from work (500k a week) and do maybe 1000k a month playing I expect to get 10-12000 out of a rear and double that on the front. The front was new when I got the bike and that was over 20,000k ago (10 months). I should get another 5000 outta that and maybe the same outta the rear if I'm good (that will put it over 12,000).

there is this tyre god named Mick up here in QLD that can do a set of anything you want for under $350... i normally just give him $350 (even when he says $330 will do) cuz he is such a great guy (i owe greenmeanie for 1st telling me about him, back on OSB!)

Bridgestone 014 F & 020 R cost about $430 for the PI Trip.
Replaced at 11000 ks Both Nackered, But really the front was Triangulated n buggered at 7000 ks. I Thought they were ok but they are different construction n flex at much different rates, so if you choose this route dont boy race too much cause you'll root the front one in 5oooks or less.
March 05 Fitted Bridgestone 012 SS F&R. Cost $350 with steel valve stems.
Done 2000ks ... Fugging Brilliant ... probably only get 6000, but at $350 a pair for this performance who gives a toss.
Replaced Rear 012 SS at Gosford for another one Got 7000, great tyre.
Replaced front tyre on return from Tiggr roadtrip to Ballarat, 11000ks later but was shagged at 8000 so i wore out the new rear keeping the front one upright to get it home.
Fitted second hand set of Pirelli Diablo's (thanks Hemi) at least 60% left in the middle, they reach temperature really quickly then front goes squirmie when pushed hard & rear likes to rip compared to the 012 SS but i feel more confident with them even though I know i'm not as quick as the Bridgies 012 ss
10/05 Fitted slightly used front 012SS I had taken off to put the diablo's on. Mick Recommended the New Pilot Race rear. Due to the PI Trip through the snowies.
Bloody Brilliant Tyre, warmed quicker then the 012 SS & very Predictable levels of grip (even in the wet) unfortunately "tiggr" killed it in 4500 ks even with the Police presence in the Snowies. I enjoyed the tyre while it lasted. If i could afford them at @$420 a pair i wouldn't fit anything else.

I keep track of all my purchases too. I prefer grip over long life, but the mileage is still sad. 2-1 wear rate for me. I really liked the MEZ1's and when they were superceeded I went with the MEZ3's but they got superceeded by the Sportec M1's. Best tyre I've ever ridden on, but I want more than 2850km out of a rear. So far I like the Diablo Corsa, next I'll probably try the Super Corsa's and see how they go. I've yet to hear anything bad about them.

probably the weight and power delivery of a v-twin that kills the back tyre that bit faster..
my rear shock is stuffed so that could be a contributing factor.

Yup, weight, Horsepower are big factors but incorrect tyre pressure is the biggest tyre killer of all.

Replaced the original Dungies after Easter holidays. BT014 F&R, front has done 9000km's 85% worn, starting to triangulate.
replaced the rear 014 (bald centre) after 3500km with a BT020 and it has done just over 6000km in 3 months, 90% shagged, do alot of long runs though so I usually chop out the centre. Iam happy with the BT014 front as it has never let me down.
The rear BT020 is great for wear considering this bike eats rear rubber like a cheese grater just as long as I don't go pushing it to the max' coz' it does get ya heart started when it lets slip but thats the tradeoff for a good wearing tyre. Other than that one big moment the rear has been excellent even in the wet.

Agreed! And suspension set-up and being ham fisted with the throttle. I threw them up because I had them and thought it would be interesting to see how different bikes affect different tyres.

(I usually run between 33 -36 psi depending on the temperature of the day, where I'm going and what mood I'm in, I don't commute at all so they get checked before each ride )

Still going strong, although the front one has developed a wierd wobble which pisses me off.

Just replaced front & rear with Dunlop 220s, $382 fitted and balanced.

So far done 250k, half of which in the wet. Confidence is good, haven't exactly pushed them yet though.

The old tyres hung in for a good while. Got 15,000 from a Pirelli GTS rear and 30,000 from a Metzler ME1. I mostly commute to work and play twisties on the odd weekend.
