Engine covers and Race preping on a budget.!

Postby MadKaw » Mon Mar 15, 2010 1:23 pm

We spent Saturday arvo getting Wattie and Blurrs bikes ready to race.

and as usual at MadKaw Racing Headquarters (also known as TAOF / Bakers Delight racing) we did it all on the cheap... :-)

Blurrs' bike was raced by the previous owner so had a lot of the stuff done, we just lock wired the rear calipers, drained the coolant, made up a left side engine cover with off cuts from Watties and tweaked the suspension..... total cost - 3 drill bits..

Wattie's bike however needed the works.
A sheet of carbon fibre was purchased and the engine covers taken off and given to Damo. Damo moulded the carbon onto the covers with a release agent so they could be removed and trimmed. They looked a bit rough at first but after a lot of tweaking, grinding and dremeling they came up pretty good.
We drilled out all the caliper bolts, sump plug, radiator cap, oil filler cap, etc for lock wiring and hose clamped and lock wired the oil filter.
Drained the coolant and replace with distilled water.
Masked and sprayed the white number boards to the required yellow.

Total cost - $45 and 7 drill bits.. :-)
plus a bit of distilled water and a can of supercheap yellow spray paint...
Lockwire was donated by MAW (off cut .?) and twisted with vice grips.... :-)

You should probably lockwire the pin holding the pads in too. I've heard they can fall out at times :)

Nice work! love the CF covers :D

Love work done on a budget.

As I eventually plan to be doing this a few quick questions...

Where do you buy sheets of CF from?

How do we mold CF, or do we all need Damo to help get this done on the cheap?

Can you post a pic of the oil filter 'hose clamp' and lock wire please?

Am I in trouble as I purchased Ti caliper bolts and they are not drilled?

Many thanks

1.CF sheets are from Ebay you buy them in lengths.

2. Not totally sure about the moulding process but I beleieve it works a bit like fibre glass in the laying process but you will have treated all your cases in release agent before doing it so that the casts can be removed once set.

3. I use K&N filters that have a hex head on top and already pre drilled. But other that that buy a big hose clamp and tie wire that tot he frame somewhere. (well it's supposed to be the frame but U used an engine bolt).

4. The high tensile caliper bolts are only high tensile at the shaft. The actual head is just forged steel I am guessing. If yours are Ti all the way to the top then you will need a diamond head drill bit and alot of patience. My advice is to go back to the High tensile bolts.

I think because it is chemical which could cause issues for you and the track/officials if it overheats and ruptures all over the place. Lets face it the bikes are run at extremely high temps for most of the time.

Nup, its because Coolant is slippery and if it gets on the track (either thru a crash, blown hose or overheating) will cause accidents...

Water is slippery too though... ;)
