Ok dumb fuck question time so please go easy lol.

My brakes are pretty shit and no matter how much bleeding i do i cannot get them any better.

Today i had a little thoughty and decided to take the pads out and make sure the pistons were all working properly to count that out. Well to my dismay i found that there was only one piston that seemed to be working, another 2 moved very little then dropped back.

Am i right in thinking that all the piston should move in equal amounts???

If i'm correct in my thinking i need my calipers overhauled and i'll also need pistons replaced.

if there is no weight on them, sometimes just the loosest one will move. put something in there and pumpo them till they all move out.

You can get the parts to service your calipers yourself and it's not that difficult (unless they are in really bad shape and need the bore to be honed). Pistons don't usually need to be replaced - just cleaned thoroughly and new seals fitted.

Go with Wattie's suggestion and watch to make sure all the pistons move. If not, give them a service. Give you the chance to flush your brake fluids and check pads, mounts, disks etc.

Fluid, disks, pads and master cylinder have all been replaced in the past 6 months lol. Servicing the calipers was next on the list but i thought i'd check them today to make sure there was nothing else wrong.


Looks like they need serviced or even upgraded

Been reading that the Nissin 4 pot calipers will fit with a bit of fettling

Well thought i'd better update this.

Gave the calipers a good going over with some brake cleaner, the stuff in a can, and its made a difference to them. In fact its made a massive difference to them.

Still going to service them when i get a chance.

What year ZX6 ??

reason i ask is coz I'm resto'ing a 95 and tring to work out if I can easily retrofit 2000 zx9 forks-brakes etc ... should be a HUGE improvement in all departments for minimum cost.

When you are screwing around with your brakes and the fluid, remember that brake fluid DESTROYS paint and Jim Beam does not. Also you can drink Jim Beam but not brake fluid.
