I wonder why it wasn't charging?

Postby photomike666 » Mon Feb 15, 2010 3:42 pm

Bit dissapointed with the bik K on this one. 3 years old, 28,000km and the stator dies. I didn't want to pay the $600 a main dealer asked for (Without fitting), to got one from the states and did the job myself. As you can see, it's a bit black and burned...

While I had the bike apart I decided to do a little service, oil, filters and plugs. Two engine mounts removed to do the outer plugs, and the whole air box to do the centre two! Gave everything a claen, Kero'd chain before relubing. Looking forward to a decent ride now.

that's an odd thing to breakdown......at least you gave sorted the charging problem out now.....maybe worth having a look at the reg/rectifier as well ?? Just to make sure that the problem is not further up the line, and another stator does not get fried ?

I've seen a few comments on US site with 06-07's with dodgy stators. I will check the reg/rec too, but am hoping this is enough. Recs are almost as pricy as the stator.

Just a quick update on this post....

As many of you will know the the rectifier was changed at this first instant. The replacement stator & rectifier failed November 2010 on the way to the snowy ride, stranding me in the middle of nowhere! These were replaced under warrenty and fitted after quite some wait for the replacement parts. Finally back on the road January 2011.

Well, here;s the funny thing... It's happening again!!!!!

Noticed on the ride to work Wednesday there was a slight electrical 'smell', then was a bit slow starting on the way home. This morning, totally dead. I'll replace the battery and do a charging check, but I'm expecting to find both stator and rectifier are again fried. I'm so over this shit.

In 75,000km the CBR did 1 rectifier after Balls Performance shorted the battery with a screwdriver and has had 1 cam chain tensioner fail. That's all I've spent on it aside from servicing. The bike was 5 years old with 12,000km on the clock when I got it, and its now 12 years old, has done over 75,000km including 4 1/2 years as a dedicated track bike.

Where as the 10 was purchased new, has yet to reach 40,000Km and I'm starting to spend more $ on electrical components than fuel. It's totally farked. I'm starting to wonder if there is an underlying problem behind this???

Thats really screwed up mike,i reckon there must be something else going on 1 lot fried ok 2 lots fried nup theres something not right with that shit. Good luck ,didnt kon sort out the last fitting ??? if so give him a call and see what he reckons. This time round i would certainly be gettin it checked by a specialist sparky. At least you got a bit of time before the snowys run
