Oil filter "burping"??

Postby Disco » Tue Oct 13, 2009 3:12 pm

Ok I'm gearing up to do my first Oil and filter chang myself  .Am doing both so I can change to 5100...And reading up a how to on a US forum they say you need to fill the filter before putting it on does that sound right????...They call it "burping" :? ....

I have done car's before and didn't have to do this.....Just seem's like it could get messy?

Nah mate, just run some oil around the rubber edge of the filter before throwing it on to help her seal. Add the correct amount of oil as per the recommended and let her idle for a few minutes initially to get the oil right around the motor and through the filter. Just try and limit any oil onto the headers. If you do, she will just burn it off anyway...

Speaking of which how the F did you get the filter on and off from the 07? Its a biatch but nothing a screwdriver through the middle wont fix unless there's an easier way? :?

Cheer's Rob.....I never done the '07 always took it in the shop....There is a tool that fit's over the end and you take it of with a spanner, thats what I'm gunna do with this one to get it off.....Also Robracer put me onto the K&N filter's they have a nut fixed to the end so you can do it with a spanner 8) .....

Sorry to hijack your post..I always fill the filter with oil before I install it..I like to think theres a little bit of lube on start up..Years ago when we used to rebuild V8 red and blue motor V8's for tow trucks ,we'd always fill the oil filter up with oil and fill the oil pump with vasoline just to get the pressure there..You dont really want a dry start up..thats when you've got the least protection..Hope that helps ..Cheers

Easy solution Dave, the K& N oil filters have a nut shape in the top & a hole for lock wire.......no special tools required ;)
+ you can get shorter K&N universal ones with the same flow rate 8)

dunno how you'd get a filled oil filter onto any bike, unless you empty it out again before fitting so that 'filling' it just 'lines' it? all oil would pour out all over the headers as you're screwing the bugger on.

I never filled any of mine - just a coating around the rubber seal
If you have no fear, you're not going fast enough.

On mine its not to difficult..I can get it filled and past the headers, not losing to much.I'm sure every bike is different .

I've never done it. On your 6, because the filters at the top of the engine you'll just spew oil everywhere. MAW sell the cheapo oil filter socket thingo's which work well on mine. Just make sure you get the right size, Sam knows it of the top of her head....oh ..that's right. The K and N's are the biz though. I asked for one last time but they had to order it in so I just got a stocker replacement.

Ive never filled an oil filter before instaling it before.
it would be a some what messy job to clean up.

And i wouldnt be to concerned about the dry start up either, its only one dry start and the oil pump will
pump the new oil around in a couple of seconds & besides there will be a fine film of oil covering the internals of the engine.

Think of it this way, every time you come home from a ride and turn the bike off the majority of the oil runs to the bottom ( sump)
& the next time you go for a ride you have to start the bike up , for a breif moment it will be mostly a dry start until the oil pump
starts to pump the oil around the engine which only takes a couple of seconds.

just put the filter on, oil in the engine and start the fucker, count to 5 if the oil light dont go out turn it off and wait then try again.

when you drain the oil, not all of it comes out, theres still plenty around.

if you have had the sump out, and/or rebuilt an engine its dry so you'd want oil there, but your bike will only have sat there for 1/2 hour to 1 hour , oils it still everywhere it needs to be. 8)

+1

In all my years on the tools only ever filled a filter and packed the pump with bum lube when the motor came out.

Only time I have ever pre-filled a filter it is with diesel engine fuel filters especially with manual prime pumps. Saves a lot of pumping ;)

Takes less than a second for oil filters to fill and circulate the system just dont rev the bags out of it initially, always re-check your oil level after start up too.
