Fuel pump continually priming...

Postby esie » Sun Jun 21, 2009 11:59 am

During the week I rode my '09 Z1000 to a friend's house. The journey is 9 kms, but about 20 mins, owing to about 20 sets of lights that are timed to get just about every single one red! Anyway, once I arrived, I turned the bike off and took the key out of the ignition. For about the next 20 mins, the fuel pump kept priming over and over again, and then for the next 10 mins or so, there was a continuous high pitched whine. The bike has done 1000 kms (not exactly being ridden hard, I know! :) Today I turned it on and let it run for a bit in the garage, and it didn't do it after turning it off then. I have noticed it one other time, but generally I don't hang around the bike after turning it off, so I haven't really noticed it any other times. Any ideas about this, why it may be doing it, should it be a warranty issue?
Cheers,
Anne

You sure it wasn't the radiator fan? i know that every kawasaki bike i've had would run the fan after the ignition was turned off until it got below a certain threshhold.

especially in the stop start traffic, the bike would be getting quite warm.

Turning off the ignition should cut any power supply to the fuel pump

This might sound silly, but the high pitched whine, could have been pressure in your fuel tank coming out from where you fill it up. My ZX636 without fail after a good ride so motor got hot or sitting in the sun, would make that sound.
Next time it does it, stick ya ear near the fuel cap see if thats it!

or just open the fuel cap and see if you hear a sound like you just opened a pressure cooker perhaps?

Did you buy the bike from a dealer? if so they can explain to you why it does it, sorry I can't remember exactly what they told me about mine but I remember them saying if you do hear a whining sound from the fuel tank it is normal. I ride a 09 250 but apparently all the new Kwakas do it, if you didn't buy it from a dealer, I am sure you would be able to ring one and they can explain to you in detail why it does it, if you don't have one that can give you a straight answer ring the boys at Bike Biz at Granville (Sydney) and they will explain, very helpful there. :kuda: :kuda: otherwise if yours still worried your bike should be under manufacture warranty still.

mike-s: yeah thats wat i did, i used to open it and all the pressure would release, but if it was a hot day, the pressure would build again! and it would start whinging again!

If that happens for esie, then $5 says the vent tube is blocked.

Just to throw a spanner in the works, it also makes this sound as well. :) I ruled that one out by hearing that noise as well, and opened the fuel tank...high pitched whine stopped! :D

My mechanic rang Team Moto Kawasaki & spoke to the head mechanic about the sound. The head mechanic said that yes it't the fuel line priming, and they have had several people mention it to them (not sure if only on Z1000's or other models as well), and it is normal. Pretty strange kind of normal, I think! I am not too worried, just as long as it doesn't drain the battery.
Cheers,
Anne

Strange normal indeed, I would keep at them ........ ask around at other K dealers to see if they have heard about it & would it be NORMAL?

Esie, I have the same thing, its the Tank depressurising. Put your ear near the fuel cap.

I just open the fuel tank and close it again when it annoys me.
