Can anyone give me some advice on what compressor to buy for general shed duties - pumping up bike & car tyres mostly. Have a little 12V one but have to get car out of garage to use and it takes ages to add 5psi.

Also good quality air pressure gauge.

What $ I need to spend to get reasonable quality.

Any advice much appreciated

$99, Bunnings, supercheap etc good for 100+ psi, small tank though, so if you're after bigger than a 25l tank, you'll pay more ($140??? i think for the 40l tank/2hp motor???). pressure gauge, dunno, supercheap could steer you in the right direction though.

+1 for the bunning's job I got the 2hp one with a rattle gun air wrench and a heap of other shite for $159

Bargain if you ask me,Perfect for just home use.

+ 1.... I got similar one from Supercheap, rattle gun etc etc etc....

They do a most excellent job and will last the distance......but make sure you don't let the oil level drop......... Biggest failure issue for these "cheapies" is running them with no oil.

Thanks guys....Looks like supercheap is the way to go. They have a special on 2HP/21ltr/77lpm with 21 piece accessories for $129. No rattle gun but that is not a must have for me.

I honestly don't know how they can do them that cheap .....Mine hasn't skipped a beat

Got the super crap auto version - has been great for a couple of years. Have painted my fairings (and done a repair), but I say go the rattle gun, great for removing front sprockets.

Got a cheapy from Bunnings , about 80 bucks and cant believe how good the thing is . Just dont forget to turn the bastard off when you leave the shed . Nothing worse than having to stagger back out in the dark to turn it off after it kicks in at god knows when in the mornng

Bunnings dude, we bought a gmc 2.5hp air compressor. does the job, cost around $100 i think, used to spray the cars bodykit, front end, other falcons rear end.
Best investment i have in my shed. Apart from the spray guns and rattle guns haha

Best investment i could (but havent) put in my garage is paying a sparky to put a f*ing power point in down there. Yes thats right, its a garage at the bottom of a set of units, and the nimrods DIDN'T put in power points when the place was built. I want to buy a decent sized compressor, don't get me wrong, but i also don't have the space... yet </grumble>

n.b. I currently have a 1/2hp compressor at the moment which is good for 60psi, and has a really small airtank too, basically its good for painting and filling tyres and not a lot more. I just put it on a really long extension cord & drag it out when needed. But im not going to be able to do it too easily with the size of my garage & a 1-1.5hp one.

Thanks guys. Looked around and the best buy was the Supercheap package + rattle gun. Set it up and it works a treat. Very easy now to check tyres while they are cold before I head off on an adventure. Came with one of those quick valve connectors that you just push on the valve and it starts inflating. Even bought one of those seats with wheels so I can sit down while I check the tyres and clean the rims...
Now all I have to find is a gauge that I can use on the 9s front wheel, damn there's not much room...

for all those guys using the cheapie compressor's there is absolutely nothing wrong with them but dont rely on them to do much more than a basic job when used in partner with an spray gun. They dont not have the moisture filters required to cature all the moisture before getting to the gun and it could cause a the gun to have a heart attack in the middle of your new spray job on your commodore bonnet .

Isn't it possible to buy a moisture filter as an aftermarket add-on that you can put on the compressor output? or do they usually put them on the air intake?

I believe you are correct but even so, the spray painter compressors have about 4 on one unit!!

Correct ... a decent pressure regulator W oil/moisture seperator is critical if you want to spray paint the car/bike etc..I would highly recommend one to save your air tools as well . Make sure you regularly lube your air tools --ATF is fine ...
Reg/dryer available from most industrial supplies. Cost between $40-$280 odd... cheapie is fine for home .

LB , the flat digi gauges aren't too bad .. mine cost bout $30 but hasn't let me down. Fits between disks etc better than most.


those seats are awesome huh? the ones with the drawer are very handy ie split links , cotter pins , rags etc......
