I have recently picked up a 99 ZX6 race bike and want to switch to race shift pattern. It seems that the front sprocket cover will be in the way and not allow me to simply rotate the shift linkage. I am guessing I will have to modify the existing sprocket cover to allow enough room but thought I should check to see if anyone else has other ideas before I butcher it? Sorry if this has already been covered on the forum, I did a search but did not find anything.

You could remove the sprocket cover....

Its just extra weight anyway..

I would like to do that, but unfortunately on my last bike I got turned back from scrutineering for not running a sprocket cover, so was hoping to avoid that.

Interesting... I never had one on my race bike..(the pcra were a bit easier though..)

Just went for a look at pics from the ASC site and theres a few ppl not running em. (most are ).
(I couldn't find anything in the Moms about it.

The rear is mentioned.

Anyway, I wouldn't risk losing an entry fee, and try to mod it if thats the case.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but...

Under "frames and parts - all disciplines" page 91 ...

12.8.8.4
Projecting sprockets, which are not behind
a clutch assembly or directly behind a
frame member, must be guarded where
the sprocket teeth are further than 30mm
from a frame member or swinging arm.
12.8.8.5
A counter shaft sprocket which is more than 30mm from the outside of the swing
arm pivot, must be covered.

I think you'll need to loose the cover and make a replacement. Phil has a neat one on his ZRX that would do the trick (not it directly, you'd need to make something similar to fit your bolt pattern).

Yep.. looks like its needed, my bad.. Didn't check the " all disciplines" section only road racing..

I got away with it, as have a few others.. Maybe due to the 30mm from frame member ruling
(is the 30mm to the closest teeth or the furthest teeth.??)

You may be able to make a flat plate up to cover the sprocket and fit the shifter in..?

That's the easy bit - the challenging bit is clearing the sprocket cover (or more to the point creating a cover that will allow the drive to be inverted).

I was thinking along the lines of the linkage used on an RS125 GP bike..

I will try to find a linkage that works, otherwise will make up a new sprocket cover that will please the scrutineers
