NUTS!
Posted: Tue Oct 21, 2008 5:34 pmEver has one of those days in the shed when you wished you never started? Well that sort of sums up Sunday afternoon. There's a question at the end - feel free to skip my rant and scroll down 
I had a very productive morning changing the fork springs on the CBR, even did a good job of making the preload collars. New oil etc all good.
So I'm putting the front end back together and I think - the front brake was a bit shit last time, I'll service the calipers. At this point I should have sat down with a beer. Instead I removed the right caliper, and set about working the pistons in and out with thin layer of Copper Grease. One all four pistons were moving smoothly I set about the left caliper. I removed it, reached over the bike and pumped the brake lever to move the pistons out. Then, POP, out flys one of the pistons, followed by heaps of 1 track day old racing brake fluid.
Not best happy. Now I have to rebuild the caliper, refill and bleed the system, then strip and grease the caliper, then rebuild it all again. So I clean up the fluid that thankfully hit the floor not the wheel and grab what's needed to get the job sorted.
Seems somewhere along the line my blue handle dumpy screwdriver has gone missing. Missing tools shit me no end, but the fairing isn't on the bike, to the long handle phillips will do to remove the master cylinder cap screws....
Or will it. These screws are renound for being made of chocolate, and being that it was my day, one turned to mush almost before the screwdrived had even touched it. %#@* Eventually I got the thing out, and bled the system. Got a good firm lever - better than before - and so removed the left caliper in order to make it as good as the right I had already finished.
Got that done and was in the process of fitting the pads back in the caliper when the phone rang and I had to drop everything and take the rescue van to pick up a friend who had put their bike down for a rest.
Got that sorted and was using the ratchet to refit the caliper mounting bolts (before the torque wrench stage), when one of the bolts snaps. So I removed the caliper again, filed two flat edges on the broken peice of bolt, and with very little effort removed the stud using an adjustable wrench. It honestly wasn't tight!
So here's the questions....
Does anyone know where to get stainless steel master cylinder screws - purchased stock chocolate ones for $2, but want something better.
and
Does anyone know where to get Caliper mounting bolts that don't cost the earth? Stock ones are $15 each (I'm planning on replaceing all four), and a set of 4 Ti bolts from our sponsor Tasty Nuts are around $70 posted
