how often should chains and sprockets be changed?

how often should sprockets and chains be changed,
what bikes should be changed more often, because i went to the bike shop and they said eveyr 5000k's also what brand of chains and sprockets do you guys/girls use?

I only use RK chains & sprockets are a mixed bag... as for frequency of change I generally change as a set when wear is showing on the rear sprocket

well im having abit of trouble with my chain now so i need to get rid of it and my sprockets look a bit weary, should i chnage it all.

i've been advised if i change the chain and use the old sprockets it will eat the chain and a new sprocket to a old chain it will eat the sprockets away.

im really in need to change it all.
i've tried to email house of speed but no replies, 2 emails and still nothing. anyone know whats the go? i really need the spares. ive tried mca but i want to see how the service is with house of speed.

not totally sure but i have seen Metropolitan Spares in Silverwater carry new sprockets and chains

Dont know about eat, but yes you should replace as a set & front sprockets are cheap as. MAW at castle hill have a good stock of sprockets & chains if they ever re open freekin big arse crane landed on their building

Mine is at 35,000 and looks awesome. I have been waiting for it to stretch and shark fin but it wont..mine you I maintain it almost every ride.

Given the service with their email dunno I would be wanting to try their service in the workshop, having saud that, few motorcycle shops seem to be up to speed with this new fangled internet thingy, most have a website and an email address but responding to said email is another story again...

Change your sprockets and chain when:
- your rear sprocket has sharp points
- your chain is loose, and you can't adjust it tighter
- your chain has tight spots that mean it can't be adjusted right
and yes - change your chain and sprockets together otherwise the old will wear out the new.

I got between 20-30k kms out of mine. Sometimes more if I looked after the chain well.

I don't see why you wouldn't get 30,000km from chain & sprockets on a bike that's treated well (well maintained and not thrashed).

My VTR1000 had a 28,000km old chain & sprockets when I sold it and they were stilol like new - the chain was cleaned & lubed every 800-1000km and every time it went on a wet or dusty road.

i know my bike isn't as powerful as yours fadi, but i've done 9500 kms (of sometimes fairly hard riding) and my chain is only about 3mm past the halfway notch on the swing-arm...

i probably tighten my chain every 1200kms or so... and i ride in all weather...

30,000 should be easy on a 250...

Yes to all the above a chain & sprockets should last 20 - 30K on a road bike.
Just as a matter of interest, Owen the markings on your swingarm don't really mean jack. as far as counting notches goes,
you could get a new chain & once cut to length could be 3 notches back... you don't have much choice in where the axil will sit once the original chain is re[placed, & never rely on the measuring both side adjusters for wheel alignment as it will always be out to a certain degree, the best method is string line or Laser (new gizmo) for accurate alignment.

Hey guys,
abit of good news from the bike today which left me pleased.

I cleaned the chain with kerosen, so much blakc grit and grim and all the greae came of, so nice and clean, and sprayed the chain with some dw 40, so then i cleaned all the mess and went for a quick ride, the knocking was still there but after 10 mintues it went away. I think it's ok for now. now thats one hassel sorted out and i saw my sprockets and they aren't that worn out they can last me well over 1000k's that when ill change it. Im happy to say its running fine for now.. i just have to get the chian lubed up, any products recommended?
