Got an oil leak

Postby fadz90 » Sun Jul 20, 2008 5:56 pm

Yesterday and today i took the fairings and frontnose cone of to give it a clean etc etc, it started to leak oil under the engine, i thought it was from the airfilter hose since i found some oil in there and thought it might of just came down the hose.

Today when i had it in the shed it had a massive oil leak under the bike, i put my hands under then engine to fiddle around to find any oil, it was very oily and greasy.

I cleaned the under carriage of the bike last week with degreaser, a friend told me some degreasers are strong enough to damage the engine seals?

Is it a possibility that i might of taken out a screw when i took of the fairings that might lead to the engine or something?

My bike is a zxr250c, if anyone can help it would be great.

cheers fadi!

I don't think any bolts or screws from the fairing will cause oil leaks.
The degrease could have penetrated an old engine cover gasket, causing it to leak.
Can you trace where the oil is coming from eg... rocker cover, clutch cover etc .
Have you done an oil change lately??? If so check sump bolt and washer or oil filter.
Over filling the engine with oil can cause the crank case to presurise and blow oil up into the air box
and then out the vent hose which leads to the underside of the bike.
Remove the air filter cover to see if any oil is in the air box.
Check oil level is correct in the sump window.

Hope this helps ya out a bit.

Where abouts do you live... I might be able to help you out.

first is first, bike was serviced around less den 600 k'z ago by previous owner, i live in wetherill park (fairfield/liverpool region).

the sump bolt seems fine, im going to clean as muhc grease and oil from under it and trace it back to fine it. Although, under where near the sump bolt is, i felt 2 rubber like points that very soft, maye a rubber seal?

I need to clean it and ill let ya know whats going on. I just hope its not major and i was going to change the oil next week after i bolt up all the fairings again.

It's probably going to end up a simple fix.
If you need a hand at all, I'm not that far away.

Agreed, hitting it with a thorough clean and then running it is the best way to do it. You may even be able to just take all the plastics off (clean 'em while your at it) and then sit the bike idling away in the driveway. Read a book for 5-10 minutes (or drink beer, your preference) while it idles away, giving it the occasional squirt on the throttle. You may find it, then again it may only present itself once oil is sloshed around inside the engine and hits a side gasket.

If it hurts, you aren't doing it right.
