New tyres and a minor adjustment = HAPPY

I took the ZZR600 into the shop the other day to get some new tyres fitted and a rego check done.
Normally I take the wheels in to get new tyres because it saves me $15 per wheel (ie. they fit the tyres for free) and I normally get the rego check done at my local servo by a car mechanic.

I had been noticing that my front tyre was always wearing asymmetrically - noticeably so - but figured it must just be the big roundabouts (shrug).
Well... after paying for the tyres and rego check, the guys in the shop tell me it should be right to go so I duck into the workshop to take it home and the mechanic has got a spanner on my headset bolt  "Is there something wrong?" I asked him. "Yeah mate... did you notice that your front tyre was worn more on one side? Well, that's because your headstock is too tight - whoever replaced the bearings last did it up too tight" well.... the bearings have never been replaced and I'm wondering if it's been like that the whole time I've had it (coming up on 4 years now).

That was a few weeks ago now and I've had time to get used to the "looseness" of the steering. OMFG its like riding a different bike - every single time I get onto it I'm smiling from ear to ear.

Sometimes its the simple things in life.... :D

Moral of the story for me is that you really need to get someone else - who knows bikes - to once over your bike every now and then. There's every chance they'll notice something wrong that you thought was normal.

Good point champ, maybe it tightened up because the bearing grease had settled & gone hard. I'd be re-greasing them if they didn't do it as part of thye solution.
hth. What hoops did ya get fitted ?.
Cheers Nanna

Hey Russell! Long time, no see (or read).

Good to hear that the bike is not only still going strong, but making you smile even more!

Hope to see you out and about again one day 8)

BT014F and BT021R... I've been running the BT012/BT020 combo for ages now. In the early days I tried a few of the other popular tyres everyone raves about but I always came back to the same combo. I just keep getting the replacement for what I had before :-)

Hi Cath, yeah it's been a few years since I was here even semi-regularly. Lots of things to catch up on!
Yep, still very happy with the ZZR.

When it warms up again I'll try and get out to the putty road for another ride with you guys. I think I still owe a few of you lunch or beer.... ;)
