Hi guys

just a quick question - I had done a service on my ZX6r a couple of weeks ago, did the oil and filter change, with fully synthetic oil (was running semi before) now the bike seems to be idling at around 1500rpm (before it was around the 1000rpm mark) also for eg if I was at 100k/hr I would be doing 5000rpm exact, not its more like 5200rpm to do 100k/hr.

Am not very tech minded and just wanted to put the question out there, so any guesses what the problem might be or am I being paranoid.

Any suggestions

Did you fit a new chain/sprocket or do anything else to change the gearing? Unless you've induced some clutch slippage at higher revs with the different oil I can't think of anything else to explain a change in RPM per km/h :shock:

yeah, the idle shouldnt affect the revs while your moving.

only the revs at idle.

if its too hight, wind it down. im not sure where your adjustment is but.. :?

Higher idle revs could be just how much easier the engine is to turn in the new oil compared to the old stuff. Oil thickens as it gets old, and you used a more 'slippery' oil. That could count for the idle revs.

I would suggest you're 100kph revs are due to clutch slippage. Bikes run a wet clutch, and if the oil is too viscous it allows the clutch to slip. I'd normally use semi synthetic because of this.

They probably knocked the idle adjuster, just put it back where it was...

Alternatively, if you have an 02-04 model it has a "choke" make sure it is all the way back down, it should be tight up against the handle.... If it is not adjusted back correctly it can cause undesirable flooding problems.

If you were getting clutch slip when cruising at 100 you'd be getting massive slip when accelerating, so I doubt that's the problem.

Hey guys
thanks for the info, really appreciate that, I did have a chain and sprocket change a week or two before the oil change, I havent really felt that the clutch slip though. I will change back to the semi synthetic at the next service as i am clocking up the k's real quick these day, living at the goldcoast and working in brissie....
