oil light on

Postby 98ninja » Thu Jan 24, 2008 12:54 pm

had a major service performed on the blade 2 weeks ago now.
everything was running fine
monday night i put a full erion exhaust system on disconnected the cable for the butterfly valve on the original exhaust.
other than that nothing has changed.
ride off to go home and 500m or so into the ride the oil light comes on.
so i stopped and checked the bike over and theres no signs of oil leakage. filter is still there sump plug still in the window shows theres plenty of oil in there. so i got back on and rode for another 500m and then the light comes on again.
rode home very cautiously with one finger on the clutch the whole way.
i have no freakin idea why the oil light comes on and stays on.
what could cause this?
i asked on an american fireblade forum and i get 15 " check your oil man!!!!!!"s back.

Only thing I could suggest would be oil pump problems. I'd be getting it to a dealer pretty smartly

my reasoning is the ride home was 30kms.
i really think the engine wouldnt go without oil for 30kms.

You'd be surprised what engines can do.

At one of the Panel Beaters xmas parties I used to attend, they hooked up 2 holden engines with a can of fuel, pulled the carbs open and wired them that way, then used a battery to kick start em. They ran for a good 15 - 20 mins without any oil or water cooling, before they seized with the heat. Let them cool down for 15 mins, and they actually started again, and went for another 10!

If there is oil in the sight glass then you can assume it has oil but the question is is the top end getting any....
The gauge is based off oil pressure not contents! ie no pressure no lube  you will need to trace the problem starting from the oil sensor & see if the problem is electrical or if its mechanical like the oil pump... if in doubt & you cant work it out get to your LBS via trailer :?

As Rob said, sounds to me like an oil pump problem. I would tow it to your mechanic and get it looked at asap.
Most engines will run for quite some time without oil before they go bang.

I had a similar thing happen to me on my ER5, turned out to be the sensor/sender unit was stuffed, but as Rob said it could also be a oil pump prob.

Did you disconnect the oil switch when you fitted the exhaust? Might be your prob- the wire may be flopping around and occasionally shorting to the frame, turning the light on. :?

What Kind of Honda?
By replacing the exhaust and disconnecting the exhaust valve the ECU can get a bit confused. Definitely unsure about Honda's but I know when the Yamaha exup valve is disconnected when fitting a full system there has to be some fuse pulling or wire chopping in order to get the computer to think its still there and functioning as it should. You mention the FI warning light comes on too? I'm guessing that by having the oil light come on Honda have basically created just a generic warning that something is no longer right.
The best way to rectify any problem with any Honda is to open the fuel cap, place a rag into the tank opening, set it alight and retreat to a safe viewing distance. Voila! No more problems! :D
I got a sweater for my birthday. I realy wanted a moaner or a screamer.

59 dollars later
either completely remove the cables that are usually attached to the exhuast servo dealy
or come up with something to mount it on so the cable cant move around too much.
the oil is fine . the engine is fine etc.
now i have an on call weekend with work to celebrate
