ZX9 full system onto a Z1000

Postby bassmaniac69 » Fri Dec 14, 2007 9:27 pm

Well I managed to pick up a brand new full 98-00 ZX9R exhaust fairly cheap this week and will start to fit it up over the xmas/new year period.

The first bolt up the headers stage should be pretty easy - the headers are apparenty the same but flow better than the stock Z units. It's the connecting, mid pipes and the hanging position that are different from the Z and of course it's a single sided 4-2-1 system with a carbon can as opposed as the 4-2 dual sided system.

I am more of a fan of the dual sided units on the Zed but I managed to get the system at a steal ($150) and I thought "what the hell, it's pretty cheap I'll give it a go". The other side is that the whole system is already black coated, which I wanted to do to my original headers and pipes to keep with the black theme I am going for. At worst I'll be able to palm the system off pretty cheap and not lose too much, if it works out I'll have two exhausts to choose from while I have the bike!

I'll have no trouble fitting the headers up, what I have to get done is for the pipes to be modded a bit and some new mid pipes made. As you will see by the pics the whole system is clamped together, not welded so there is some advantage when making new pipes up etc. I have a contact in an exhaust shop who can do it fairly cheap for me, so I’ll let him do the work rather than risking myself stuffing it up!

I was thinking of having him shorten the part under the bike a bit to reduce the angle of bend the mid pipe had to be made at to fit and to have him make up two mid pipes – one for the carbon can that came with the system, one for one of my existing Yoshi TRS pipes.

I guess my question to you guys that have more experience in these things is if you can see any flaws or problems this may bring up in both the fitting and running of the bike? Or do you have any ideas of how this could be done better?

I assume I will need a PC and am planning for one mid next year, the bike should run ok until then?

Anything else I may be missing??

Here are photos of the system next to the bike to give you an idea of what it looks like/size etc. As you will note it is quite longer than the standard system!!

As you can see the part where the pipes merge from two into one from the headers is quite a distance back compared to the stock and the two into one mid pipe area is quite far back - I imagine both of these will have to be shortened.

Not an exhaust part obviously..... it's my latest bling; a Rizoma billet brake/fluid res - pretty!

Leave 'em long and shorten the can
I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it.

Hey Neka!

I don't know if there is much point going for the high flowing 9 headers just to go back to the twin pipes...but I am no means an expert at these things!!

I'll let you know how I go - 1st step is to trial getting the headers on over xmas and taking it from there....my exhaust guy can't get to me until mid Jan at least so I've got a bit of a wait...but that's cool!!

hmm i figured if it was more free flowing, then regardless of 1 or 2 outlets, its STILL more free flowing..right?? especially if a 4-1 is more free flowing than a 4-2 system.... anyway.. if it was gunna make a difference (weight, power etc) and wasnt too hard, id consider it...
