coolant on tyres

Does anyone know the best way to clean coolant that has spilt onto the tyres?

It's water soluble so I'd just give them a good wash with water and detergent then rinse. May as well do the whole bike while you're at it 8)

Thanks Mick,

i tried that but it feels like it has left some kind of residue on the tyre.

Has anyone used any tire dressing as metioned in this link? http://hawg-wash.com/cleantirwhee.html

Coolant is mostly glycol, it won't hurt rubber (hint, what are radiator hoses made of?), and at worst, will leave a sticky residue that will rub off with some slight use.

Regards, Andrew.

Mate, I have spilt it on the tyre before, after a few kays the road with wear it off easy, I wouldn't worry its no biggie. just sway from side to side for the first few kays..you shouldn't lose any grip.

well i wouldnt reccomend bathing ur tyres in coolant, considering it is slippery as fark..and thats why u cant use it to race...

wash it the best u can..then take it easy till ur sure its safe...

Split heaps that ended up on the front tyre on the weekend. Threw a bucket of water at it and went for a ride almost straight away - no issues.

Rubber ain't rubber. There are many types of "rubber" and they have vastly different chemical vulnerabilities.

Sorry for the late reply but it might help you later on with any other dilemma's re: your tyres!

When I get new tyres I put the bike on the race stands and give them a light scrub with acetone on a rag to help remove the release agent from the rubber.

Then I go for a ride afterwards to scrub them in!

If you have anything thats oily like glycol or oil for that matter this will clean it off no probs.

If anybody is concerned about the use of acetone, I have 4000 on my Pilots and they still give me penty of grip even though they are nearing the end of their life.

Give it a go next time if you are worried about grip!

Wrap the tyres in gaffa tape, then pull it off quickly. The magical power of gaffa tape will hold all the coolant, leaving your tyre perfectly grippy again.
