more importantly do YOU have probs with it??

dont foget, as u stated below, different specs for diff countries..also different licensing arrangements..ive heard that a lot of the US guys dont go thru wot we go thru...so they may hurt their bikes with bad gear changes etc?? maybe??

Any bike will have problems with an abused transmission. Second is the most common failure. Way back when, I was seriously considering a YZF-600R and got told horror stories about 2nd gear problems.

A bit of research showed that there's a demographic on every single sporting 600 that has issues with second gear. Funny, that.

It seems that way with the US forum.

No problem with the bike apart from lazey shifting and it has 20000km.

If your Zed ain't doin' it , you have nothing to worry about.

the problem with reports like this is that you only ever hear *one* side of the story, not the side that says *multiple drag starts on every Friday night at the local street races* - performed by some gumby fuckstick with 2 left feet, who then has the nerve to whinge about his bike being a piece of crap because * all of a sudden its jumping out of 2nd gear...*

My Zed seemed very sensitive to having the right chain tension. So check this first if you have any problems, I used to run mine too tight, but loosening it up seemed to help a lot ;)

I agree there is always two sides of a story.

the Yanks are *legendary* for this type of story - I take anything read on US forums with a bucket of salt.....

the tip about chain tension is good, this is often the cause of bad shifts, and it can make the gearbox play up a bit as well.

If your 6 starts jumping out of 2nd or 3rd under normal acceleration, then you will have a problem with worn gear dogs. Swabio had a problem on his 6 this time last year, it got replaced under warranty I think ? Occasionally, the selector fork return spring loses tension and/or breaks, and this will also cause problems with changing gear. But 'jumping' out of gear is generally always because the gear 'dogs' are worn and don't keep engaged under pressure.....

Exactly what Gos said.

The most common cause for premature wear in the dogs is getting back into the throttle too quick when changing, before the gear is properly engaged. Either trying too hard to go quick (a la the drag race starts), or being lazy (slow) on the change. One way to avoid this is to install a shift kit, the stronger springs of which will engage the gear more firmly (faster). Another is to shift correctly.
