Have just bought a speedohealer for my 2005 ZX12R which Wolfracing ordered for me from the USA. I was told this could be used to recalibrate the speed settings in my bike therefore eliminating the restrictor at top end. Has anyone else tried this? Does it work? Will it affect the performance by making the computer think it is going slower than it actually is? Is GPS accurate at that speed when im testing it out? Is it insane to try it on a dyno? Will the ram air work properly at that speed on a dyno?
According to an online gearing commander standard gearing should pull around 340 at about 12000rpm. does a standard 05 12R have enough grunt to actually push that sort of speed or am i just getting ahead of myself?

AMCN ran a test at Avalon on the 12r
(from memory) ...the one they tested went 323
(A series it was when 1st released)
B series supposedly has same horses
so it should be the same 'cept the computer
turns off the fuel/ignition at 299

324kph is what they got out of the Tainton-tuned Hayabusa with a full system, headwork, cams, blueprinting and raiseded compression.

The stock Busa ran something like 311, the ZX12 308 or so...

Well, doesn't so much turn it off as back it off, so the bike only makes enough power to balance out the air resistance rather than exceed it.

lotsa places youd probably be surprised at how much time i spend at the top end of the scale, you can never go too fast

had an interesting convo with a mechanic who used to work for the kawasaki race team and he was saying that once you hit 300 the computer should not let the bike rev any harder, but then he couldnt explain why my bike will rev to 12000rpm in top gear when it hits 300 at about 10400 can anyone else explain this? how exactly does the limiter work?

Dyno's don't use top gear for power runs, its usually 4th gear. At least thats what my local dyno place told me.

You would be hard-pressed to find a dyno that would do a run in top-gear, it would load up the engine too much.

A stock 05 ZX12R *will not* exceed 299 *indicated* because of the top-gear limiter. If this is bypassed with a TRE, you might be able to squeeze 310 *indicated* on a good day. Thats indicated speed. Speedo error of only 5% would reduce this to about 295. Speedo error can be up to 10%, the error factor generally gets higher the faster you go.

The quickest that AMCN saw from an *unrestricted* ZX12R back in 2000 was 304kmh, measured using a radar. When my 05 was dynoe'd, as soon as it hit redline, the exhaust note sounded like 2 cylinders had the spark shut-down, it just refused to rev past that certain point. I would think that the rev-limiter is just built into the tacho-reading read by the computer....I know that on the last WSB run to PI, I hit the rev-limiter twice, in 3rd and 4th, chasing Ponti and Strika to the Tintaldra Pub !!! The bike just stopped revving and went 'brrp brrp brrp'......

The only track in Australia that would be capable of supporting a ZX12R at full noise is Phillip Island. the straight at EC is far too short. There may be a million country back-roads where people hit 300km every day of the week, but the only way to really prove any top-speed claims is with a radar reading, I don't think a dyno or GPS could really give you an accurate measurement.

Ram will work on a dyno if you have one of those movie studio typhoon fans in front of it....

Make sure you get one that blows at 300kmh for the correct ram-effect !!

Re this discussion about top end restrictions on ZX12R's.

Let me tell you what Iv'e just bought and will be fitting this weekend. It's a Nikko Racing Timing Retard Eliminator G-Pack OVER 3 (for 2005 models). They have a standard G-Pack for earlier models as well (go look at the demon tweeks website at http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk or check out e-bay as they sell them via http://www.ratedrparts.com...talk to Steve).

The TRE is a device which allows much better throttle response in the first 4 gears. What the manufacturer has done is to make a SEPARATE IGNITION MAP FOR EACH GEAR. This has been done to reduce the noise of your bike and help it comply with ADRs. It also makes for a softer power delivery...particularly through first to forth gear.

This timing retarder allows full timing at full throttle. As you shift up through the gears, the amount of throttle needed to access the advanced curve decreases, until you make it into 5th gear and then it's gone, giving you nice, smooth operation.

THE G-PACK OVER 3 WILL ALSO REMOVE THE 300Km/H SPEED LIMITER AND INCREASE YOUR REDLINE CUT-OUT BY 900RPM.
The TRE is 100% compatible with the Dynojet Power Commander....fortunate as I have a Power Commander III USB fitted, along with a Yoshi RS3 Ti can.

From all accounts fitting this thing is as easy as fitting the Power Commander. You only need to connect a plug onto the main harness....No cutting, splicing or soldering is required. No doubt I'll find out on the weekend when this thing arrives in the mail tomorrow.

I'll let you all know what difference (if any) it makes.
