Gut a can

G'Day, I own a 05 ZX10. Would like to know is it possible to "gut the can"
without losing any power through the rev range. I just want to give the bike a bit of a note with out forking out $800.00 on an aftermarket pipe.
Or is there an aussie shop/manufacturer that produce race baffle kits for a ZX10....
Your help will be appreciated

In a nutshell, no it isn't. Any modifications to the stock can will affect the power delivery in one way or another......

By "gutting" the can, you may make it louder, but you will inevitably lose power down low in the rev range. Its like night follows day - it will *sound* great, but will actually be slower off the mark.

Up top you may gain a fraction more HP with the exhaust being opened up a bit.

The best bet is to forget butchering the stock can - get a good aftermarket can (I can get you a good quality s/steel slip-on for $440, or a c/fibre slip-on for about $600), and take it from there. Sell your stock can on e-bay for maybe $100-$150, the changeover isn's so bad then.

Location ?? bung it in your profile mate.....

try it without the can it'll have the same effect as gutting it . you'll have nothing up to about 5000rpm then its like hitting powerband on an old cr500 not the desired effect

I still have my standard exhaust with the Cat taken out & holes drilled in the baffle plate ... took that off & brought an Akrapovic exhaust i had it on there for about a year then took that off & now i have a Racefit growler exhaust on it  so now i have 3 exhausts to choose from for my 04 ZX10R ... Loud Medium & Moderate :P Man the Racefit growler exhaust sounds awesome & all my mates tell me thats the best mod i have done to my bike

gutting a can will definitely make it sound really loud but i think u will lose back pressure down low and mid but get a few hp in the top. When Greeny shortened my can (took out alot of the inside crap), it was so freaken loud that my brother could hear me from 3-4 streets away when revving it off its tits. just get an aftermarket slip on, better for performance and looks too
