what is it like to run the bike without the muffler? better or worst?

Assuming you're talking about removing the entire can and having the pipe 'straight through' - it has advantages and disadvantages.

Having a can/baffle/muffler causes some air restriction which saps some of the bikes power. In simple terms the engine has to use some of it's energy pushing the air out of the restricted can. At the high revs end removing the can will increase HP.

One of the weird effects of having a baffle/restriction is that it creates back pressure in the pipe and actually increases power in the mid rev range. My can has a removable plug which when in place forces some of the exhaust gas back down the can through the baffles. With this plug in I can feel a slight loss in top end power but a fair surge in mid range (which I'd normally use lots on the road). This will obvioulsly be exagerated if the entire can was removed or in place.

Noise is another issue that can have good/ill effects. Removing my cans plug makes the bike a fair bit louder and sound far more meaty. On club ride outs and bike meets this is kudos. When I leave for work at 4am it's definately not. I have started my bike without any can at all, and it sounded like the start grid of a V8 race. Which was cool as my neighbour races a grass track V8 that has straight through pipes, and my bike sounded better :lol:

I don't know if there are any factors where engine damage can be caused by not having the back pressure - I've heard rumours of burning exhaust valves, but never seen any evidence.

possibly higher exhaust temp due to freeer flowing exhaust? only thing i can think of as a reason for burnt valves.

yea..what they said...plus mr plod will hump ur bum big time if caught....

i started my vtr with no cans...boy it was like a tractor..a BIG,GRUMPY...LOUD AS FARK tractor!!

i'm not worried about being caugh, but if i take the can off it'll come out like under suspension or all that, i don't know if the smoke gona ruin whatever is in its way up, and not i'm too chicken to take it off coz now u siad it'd burn a valve? :shock:

With a carburetted bike you would have to adjust fueling to suit.
Seeing that your bike, presuming your talking about the 6, is injected its reasonable to assume no ill effects will come of taking off your muffler.

However... What sounds good at idle and revving while stationary, im sure will translate to bleeding ear drums once loaded up on the street. YaY.

Give it a go and have a ride around the block, itll be fun.

sorry to revive an old thread but well im bored!
on the weekend a 6r pulled up at the natural arch (gold coast) and it only had a small dump pipe exiting just pasr the lower fairing
the bike looked to be an 05/06 so im asuming there may be a cat converter down there somewhere as well but this bike wasnt loud at idle and wasnt untill he opened it was it loud... this bike sounded like no other bike ive heard b4, and it was great!

Betcha it was turboed- the turbo itself does a good job of silencing the bike, at least down low, and you can do away with the muffler!

not to sure on teh turboed thing.. i didnt hear any whistly there and the fairings looked std but then again it was quiet not std quiet but not as loud as i would have expected

While playing with the bike I took off the mufflers from the GPX and I also removed the exhaust manifold. It sounded really shit, like a noisy poppy lawnmower. But it had cool blue flames when you played with the throttle

i took the can off my 6r so all it had was headers...

had no stick under 8k, robbed all the bottom end!
