bike turns off while riding

Postby GForce » Tue Dec 12, 2006 8:48 am

hi guys, i have a problem and i know it is fuel related.

while riding, the bike splutters and now matter how much a rev it, the bike isnt getting enough fuel and then turns off. this happened when i was on the highway and today in the hills when doing high revs. i pull over and then switch it to prime for 2 seconds and then switch it back and it starts again. riding again after 1 min, it happens again. BTW i just got it carb balanced.

what could it be? dirty tank? shit in my carb bowl? is there anything i can put in my tank that will clean it out?

Mate of mine had this on an FZR1000 once. It was fine until he ran highish revs for a while. He screwed with it for ages and it turned out to be a kinked fuel hose which let enough fuel through at low revs but justs couldn't keep up as it sucked more fuel. Maybe when they put the tank back on they stuffed it

ive no good ideas on what could be causing your prob but if it is just bad fuel i would drain the tank - replace the filter (if you can) and put a tin of Motul fuel cleaner through it.
it costs about $20 a can from any decent bike store.

i had a spluttery bike once and it turned out to be shit in the fuel. when i drained it i could actually see the crap in it. i did the above (except change the filter cause i couldnt easily get at it) ands its been fine ever since.

i don't think taking a dump in the carbs will help. (just HAD to say that)

since it has just been worked on thats the first place i'd be going and asking them about it.

as for those 'wonder clean' type products.. lets say i'm sceptical.
if there is ah, foreign material, in the tank (dirt/water) it needs to come off for a wash out and the float bowls at least drained, preferably off, to make sure there is no sludge in there.
OMO is good. fuel is better.

Mr Stompy has it though - simplest things first. drain tank, replace filter.

no kinked hoses like Glen says?

make sure vacuum tap (it is a vac tap?) is working properly.. again, with no kinked hoses.
i've done this a thousand times and no-ones ever been hurt. much.

i will take the tank off today and see if there is a kinked fuel line. if not then ill drain the tank tmw because i still have a full tank. after that i will open up my fuel tap and see if there is anything stuck there. this happened when i was in high revs for a while in the hills or highway. i think a apprentice was servicing my bike that day so from now on, nomore apprentice touching my bike.

Exact same thing was happening to me but with one extra detail....power/electrics.....turned out to be a loose battery connection :)

next time it happen keep riding it with the tap on prime and see what happens as prims doesnt use vaccum to let the fuel out

it is possible that your fuel tap has a prob but more likely this

it is common with the VFR400 also with a vac tap

when you ride at highrpm and throttle for extended periods you arent getting enough vaccum at the tap for the fuel to flow

same happens on the 400 on long straights , bowls run out of fuel

i got told that it could be the fuel tap today too so i got home and used the air compressor to blow out the vaccum hole. it sounded blocked so i kept at it and then while looking at the hole and using the air compressor, a piece of paint from my tank flew out and hit my eye. it was in the hole and now it breathes better. im getting a fuel filter tmw and hopefully everything runs fine. keep u all updated

check the fuel pump relay. I had a similar prob with my ZX6R when it was on the road. it is simple if you have a multimeter and the workshop manual.

BTW what bike is it?

sounds like a vacuum lock...ive heard of bikes doing this if the fuel level is overfilled when u fill up..u dont go past the lip do u??

otherwise if the fuel line isnlt kinked..and the breather hole/hose (my 929 has a hole and no hose) then id be speaking to whoever balanced the carbs..maybe they just leaned it out too much??
