What's with the 'oil filter fence' on Kawasakis?

All the Kawasakis I have owned or worked on (GPZ250R, GPX250R, GPZ900R, ZZR1100, ZZR1200, GT550 and Z440) run the same oil filter. But one of them (GT550) has the assembly of the filter and it associated bits in a different order- the filter fence goes UNDER the filter rather than ON TOP of like every other Kawasaki. Why would this be so?
The factory manual says so. I have run the bike both ways because when I did my first oil change I incorrectly assumed it would be the same as any other Kwaka. I suspect later GTs like mine might be the same as other Kwakas but the section of the manual doesn't state this. The spring sits on the raised inner lip of the fence and actually damages it a bit. Bugger.

hmmmm
in my experience...the oil filter on a MAch III differs from a GPz2fiddy
is different from the Gpz750turbo is different from zee GeePeeX750
which is different to the ZX12

so I have no feckin' idea......
