Hi guys. Hows this for a noob question; I bought a gpx 250 from Melbourne and the freight company that I want to transport it to Tassie want it on a pallet. The seller has a ute and is a couple of minutes from the depot so the only hurdle is what the guy needs to put it on and how to secure it. I've never transported one so I'm at a loss. Any suggestions?

You should be able to pick up an old bike box from any bike dealer. They will generally give them away for nothing. All the tie down point etc are already in the base of the box so it makes it a little easier and protects the bike more. Good luck

its a bit of a pain in the ass, is there neway u can fly over & take it back on a ferry?? (does one run??)

just that, to put it in a crate u have to half dis-assemble..then to uncrate it u gotta go thru all that again.... dunno wot kinda cost involved, and if the seller will go thru it....

you could fly over on the morning of the 6 Aug for $89 (virgin Blue)

and take it back on the ferry for $163 (total)

= total cost of $252

We've been examining all the options and having it freighted is the cheapest. The bike is unregistered, which is preferable anyway, as interstate vehicles have to have a level 3 inpection for rego. I also don't fancy riding an unknown performer 300 kays once its off the boat. I would like to bring a ute or something over and spend a couple of days, but my hubby isn't too keen on spending that much money. Can't really blame him, it would double the cost of the bike.

What's involved in getting a permit to ride it unregistered? The Spirit website says they need a RWC to allow it on board.

* Vehicle fares indicated apply to motor vehicles registered for use on public roads and are designed primarily for the carriage for passengers.

* Vehicles travelling on a permit are to comply with the aforementioned and a certificate of roadworthiness must be provided at time of check-in.

hmm but whats it gunna cost to crate it up, post it across and collect it in a ute??
are u able to do all this?? or is the dude gunna charge ya to do it??

i sold my bike to tassie before, all u had to do is to book it with the ferry company which is called hum.......i can't rmemember, all u have to do is tell them someone is gona drop it off in melbourne and then they will label it and then u'll receive it from the dock

it cost about $150 - $250 i can't remember the exact amount , however it wasn't that expensive or on a pallet kinda thing,

give them a call and find out, it's possible, in fact it's the best way

Cheers. I think we'll go with turning up at the freight depot, sans pallet, and tell them here it is, if it gets scratched in transit we'll wear it.

why dont u catch the ferry and then ride it home.

I go to Autotrans in the course of my job every day, and I've seen the pallets they mean. They're a metal pallet that the bike ties down on, and is then loaded onto a transporter via forklift. Only a transport co. would have them, so why are they asking you?

BTW, if your bike was transported interstate via Toll/Autotrans, or you suspect it may have been, check the seals in the front forks. Have seen them tied down for transport for a week or more before they actually went on the truck....

Yay! Its here! The guy ended up getting a metal crate from a bike shop.

Great news, now all you need to do is RWC and rego and you can go for a ride
