servicing time.

Ok, so i decided i need to give my bike a service and originally decided to let a shop do it to prevent any of my chris'isms and wrecking the bike :P but i just got quoted 3 prices, 400 dollars from red baron, 300 from my local shop and 350 from another i cant remember, and since im not made of cash being a uni student ive decided to do it myself.

Ok, so i need a checklist and if anyone has an online resource for the 87 ninja, like the owners manual that would be cool (still cant find any online).

what im thinking:
-oil + filter,
-fuel filter if its dirty,
-air filter *are they reusable? or is it like generic car filters that are one use only?*
-plug and check the lead

i will probably send it into a shop to get the carbs tuned and balanced as i hate tuning carbs, and to get the tappets checked (i could do it myself but ive never done it before.... trying to reduce risk here still :P).

EDIT: noticed the manuals sticky :P never mind about the manual part ;D

Chris, replace the fuel filter anyway worth about $5 and put your suburb/state in you profile then when you do crew it up we can send the local boys to fix it up 8)

Would help to know which State/City/Suburb you are in, we might be able to recommend a shop that does a minor service at a reasonable price. I just got a major serviced done on my 6 for $350, Race Replica, Sunshine, West Melb.

hahah... i just realised the red barons service only included oil + filter plus checking tyre pressures radiator fluid levels and bleeding brakes... how is that worth 300 dollars...

well heh... ill just do the work myself, um i was just looking at the manual for the GPX250r... are there different engine specs for the 250r compared to the regular GPX250? im talking about plugwise (i will just get the code off the existing filter to not make any mistakes.

Oil filter is a cartridge unit thats located inside the sump, air filter is one of two types, a paper one that isnt cleanable, or a foam one that is. (i cant remember if its the gpx or zzr that has the paper filter).

Changing oil is a peice of cake, same goes with changing plugs. Balancing carbs, etc, is a bunch of easy work (i just borrow my neighbours carbtune for mine, ).
If you want to do a carby balance and dont mind coming towards the i can borrow them, takes about 15 minutes to do with my 4 cyl bike, i imagine it'd take 2 minutes with your twin.

Tappets can be done, but its a real p.i.t.a. due to the severe level of compactness with the engine closeness to the frame. Maybe ask the shop how much to just do the tappets? (ive done them, but its too much a headache to wanna do more than the once)

yeah its all pretty easy, i just have to find the right plug now, NGK doesnt have my exact model so ive been checking all the GPX / ZZR models, most seem to be an NGK C8HA with a 0.7 gap... but there was also an ex250 model that listed it as an NGK DP8EA with a .9 gap *shrugs*

I've always used the CH8A in my 250, you may want to/be able to get away with using the CH9A as it runs a touch hotter (the 8 is a medium/cool plug from memory).

+1

I got my 24000km service there, much cheaper than if I went to Syd City and the job was done properly..
