It's bloody Superbike weekend - Melba BMX track 1-2 March, and just 7 weeks before the Aussie Nationals. Thought we'd better get some serious racing in before the big one. ACT State title is one of only 6 races between now and Nationals.

Just to keep things on thread, the BMXs are running Intense race tyres, I don't think the Conti's will fit.

Certainly is a bugger it's that weekend, but them's the breaks. From the BMX club I'm hoping there will be around 8 riders (including myself & my two boys) plus associated family. Not sure of exact numbers, but expect there to be about 15 in all. They have their eyes on the Canberra Motor Village, which I've stayed at in the past but couldn't tell you how far it is from the track.

I had a set of Conti Sport attacks on my 98 ZX9R and was well impressed. As has already been mentioned, they a very confidence inspiring tires. Maybe it is the difference in temperature over here in the land of the long white cloud but one point I would disagree with is the time in which they take to heat up. I have done a couple of track days at Taupo recently, one on Diablo corsa's and one on the Contis. With the Diablos (which are Shit IMHO) They felt like they were at correct operating temp after one lap out on the track whereas the Conti's took at least three laps in the morning to heat up properly...granted it was fairly cold in Taupo that morning though and by the afternoon this was reduced to around 1 1/2 - 2 laps. Either way they certainly took longer to heat up than the Diablos. Further to this point, I found them to be 'Pure Evil' prior to heating up properly. They were like riding on ice while in a cold state. I had the pressures a lot higher than I had the Diablos set at and I believe this to be the reason for the extra time involved, the tire guru who put them on for me said in no uncertain terms "DON'T RUN THEM TOO SOFT." They are designed to be run at higher pressures than most tires and this is why they hold their profile well while on the lean.

I love these tires. By the last session of the day I was utilizing the entire performance maximums of this tire, at the pressures I had them at, fitted to a ZX9R. I know this for a fact as I was drifting the front and rear on a right hand turn, breaking heavily at the exit for a short straight setting up for a right hand hairpin.... and I have never felt more in control! I would never dream that this situation would be so much fun but it was. The conti's have a great feeling on the track and give tremendous feedback to the rider and don't 'just let go' like other tires. If you are thinking about purchasing these tire note the following:

1) make sure they are to temperature before hanging on them too much
2) DON'T RUN THEM TOO SOFT - KEEP THE PRESSURE ABOVE WHAT YOU WOULD RUN NORMALLY (For the 9 on the road I was running 40 front, 42 rear! most tires i run 36, 40 on the road.)
Now 2005, ZX6R 636's ROCK MY WORLD!!!

After reading your comments about the pressures Biggles, I was going to shoot you down in flames and give it to the bloke who told you to run those pressures. But I refrained, thinking that I had better check this out and see for myself before making comment!

I went way up in the front and rear as you suggested. Now, I can quite confidently say, the guy who told you to run 42 psi in the tyre is a dick!!!! Seriously, no wonder the fucking things wouldn't heat up at the trak for you! Is it any wonder with 42 psi in the tyre!!!!

I setlled on 36 front, 40 rear as a good combination. They gripped well and didn't tear up much. I gave them a pasting up the reefton though and they have only a ride left in the rear now. But the front is still mint with at least another 5k out of it!

LOL...Well kudos for you for that restraint...its something I should try in another thread (Grrrrrrrr....Quick_Stix)
Just a small correction however, I wasn't running those pressures at the track (Only on the road)..I was 36 front, 38 rear at the track (which may have been still too high), and once they heated up were awesome. When I had the Diablos I was around 32,30 pressures on the track.

I did notice I needed to be very careful for a while to make sure there was heat in the tires when set up at the 40's area (on the road), but I did find that they worked very well at that pressure on the road ONCE THEY HEATED UP. Also, I run two up quite often so the extra pressure was good for this.

I thought you might get a giggle out of that Biggles!!!!! two up riding, I can nderstand going higher. Perhaps clarify that next time, or you might have half a dozen gumby riders pumping 42 psi into the front tyre and then proceeding to spit themselves down the road!!! :D

Fairy muff mein Freund...but I did think this; "(For the 9 on the road I was running 40 front, 42 rear! most tires i run 36, 40 on the road.)" was pretty clear

So out of interest, what pressures are you running the conti's on the road? Are you riding a 9 too?

One thing I noticed was while I was two up a lot I only got about 3-4k out of the rear. There were extenuating circumstances though such as within that mileage I had two full days at the track and the ride 2-up to Taupo and back...so all in all I didn't mind...sticking to the road is far more important! What year 9 have you got? I recently had a pretty bad off and wrote my bike off...short story, car parked around a blind corner and driver out of the car on the road. I went over the handlebars after grabbing a handfull and went under the car (not that I remember any of it). I loooooved that bike and I'm stuck on what to get next....everyone is telling me the 10 but its so easy to ride its almost boring unless your going 100% everywhere. I don't like to ride that way on the road as per reasons above. May end up with another 9 yet.
