Got the phone, but can't use it at the moment... gone to telstra to get a new simcard, number etc.. got home and was eager to try it, but couldn;t make or receive a call, so went back to telstra today where a sales assistand "played" with it for an hour, tried everything, only to say at the end that there is a barring on it so I should visit the mobile-king fellow... went to see him, he said , yes the restriction is due to a lost or stollen notice possibly , so for $160-$180 plus 3-4 weeks wait he can fix it....
Got home and contacted the people I purchased it from, only to hear that the fella was using it 5 days earlier using telstra as well. His wife who I was talking to suggested that I get onto Nokia and they should be able to talk me through the resetting the masterset. At any rate if i was't happy they offered a full refund.
Nokia said that I have to visit one of their service centres ( one in Parramatta, one in Chatswood) since they don't do it over the phone  and if I can prove that the phone is less than 12 old they reset it for free.

It seems like going to take a bit of running around to get this thing going  but it's going to be worth it in the end 8)

I used to work for Vodafone for 2 years... Where did you get your phone from. If its been barred due to lost or stolen, then your chances are very slim of getting it unbarred. As every phone has an IMEI number which is a phone individual code.
Part of the process of making a phone call is the cell tower checking the IMEI to ensure its not blocked. Who blocks it? Any network can! So if you lose your phone on Telstra, they will block it and it iwll be blocked on every network...

What to do, take it back get your money back. Otherwise threaten them with the cops for selling you a stolen phone! :kuda:

Yet Saki I hear you, at this stage I'm inclined to take the time and take it to their service centre for two reasons.

1) I've spoken to the woman in person and they seem like Ok people and she said 5 days ago her husband was using the same phone on the telstra network. On top of that she offered a refund in full, which people who are suss, normaly wouldn't.

2) it's a good phone ( value for money) looking at it's new price it's "worth" the run-around even though didn't expect to have to do any of it.

let you know of the outcome :kuda:

Where did you get the phone from if you dont mind me asking ? I assume a shop that sells used goods ?

Well in all my wisdom that vodafone provided me with, I've heard all the bullshit excuses about IMEI Barring and that women stating "OH IT WORKED FINE THEN JUST STOPPED WORKING" was bout no 2 on the list.

Sometimes i heard that if a phone isn't used for a while and isn't on the network, then someone starts using it it will work for a few days no worries. Dont know why, people just say it worked. Then all of a sudden, just magically stopped! Thats cause obviously the IMEI bar had picked up.

I spose the point im trying to make is, If someone sells you something at a price which is "too good to be true" then chances are it is! From what i can understand from what i have read, sounds like you've bought this phone from a shop that has sold you an item which they claim is legit and obviously want to get a sale from you. You have assumed its a fantastic buy, which is fair enough considering you most likely didn't know the phone was barred or perhaps even what the barring was.
So they sell you a "stolen" or phone which is unoperational. It doesn't work for you, you get it checked out, someone else tells you its barred and you now have a brick.
The fact that a business is whiling to "rebirth" the phone also, i just wouldn't go there. Its highly illegal, basically on par with buying a car or bike thats had new engine NO and VIN etc. I would take the phone back, get a refund and try again.

I know this sounds a bit crazy as its just a mobile phone, but the police always used to check in with us about stolen phones as its very easy to trace. Basically as soon as you put a sim card in and get coverage it will show all the sim card details, which can come up as you and which tower the phone is on. Plus each phone company has a fraud squad and if a phone with a new IMEI is added without there being a Legit IMEI placed on the network, then things dont match up and they start to get suss.

So im just saying try not ot get yourself into trouble! Just looking out for ya :kuda:

Thanks Saki,

I purchased it on ebay  (naturally), here is the link:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... 0399340359

At this stage I've requested the original receipt from the seller, so i can get Nokia to do the unlocking for nothing...... see what the woman comes back with.
Thanks for the advice, it's good to hear from people who were or are involved in that industry 8)

Yeah mate, hopefully works out ok. Im unsure if Nokia can remove it or not as its a Network based lock, as in if its stolen the NETWORK will lock it out from being used, but im not sure what Nokia can do.

Good luck with it anyway hope works out well for you and you score a bargain! :D

Anyone else got a GPS receiver they don't use and want to sell? I have access to a 6110 Navigator and want to see if I can get this happening before EC in June. Is the software relatively easy to set up/run on a Nokia? I get scared of new things sometimes...

its freakin easy!!!!

you just need to go into the settings in racechrono and connect to your bluetooth receiver.

do that at home, coz at the track there's a few bluetooth gps's on and its hard to pick the right one.

i use it when i walk the mut, (seeings i dont have a bike) see where i went average speed and distance etc. sweeet :kuda:

Had it down at EC on the 8th, Russ helped me to set it up, only worked for the first session, after that it kept on turning off inside my leathers. It taken a while to figure out the locking setting on it, to avoid it turning itself off.
