Gos.
In my 98 ZX9 I used Avgas at least once a month. After 40,000Kms I finally had enough $$$ saved to get the engine blue printed, ported and flowed. The guy doing it commented on the fact my engine and exhaust was one of the cleanest he had ever seen. I know it ran better and had a bit more oomph running on avgas. It was even better on avgas after the engine was done. :D

Now I’ve got the 02 ZX9 I want to do the same.

If I cant get avgas.. i'll have to find a servo that sells this BP gold or Shell 130..... But the avgas just burned soooo cleanly. Smelt better too.

BP Gold is only sold at really big BP outlets. You should give BP a ring and they will tell you which outlets sell it. Its the biz !

Not real sure about the Shell equivalent, its a high-octane blended with ethanol..... :x I used it 'once' in the MFP12, and it made no appreciable difference.

But AvGas ??? It makes all the difference, especially if your engine is already a reasonably hi-comp motor that can benefit from using a higher octane fuel. I used AvGas in the 2001 season, when racing the Black Pearl, and the pistons in that engine had been modified to give about a 11:1 static compression. The bike ran really 'crisp', throttle response was heaps better, much better than running normal 95 octane pump fuel.

After January 1, all you will need to do to buy AvGas from a supplier, is show them you are a current member of a motorsports club that has a leaded fuel exemption. It might cost $40 a year to be a member of the local Bucket racing club ? That is your ticket to AvGas.....

:D

G'day Gosling1,

Av Gas (Aviation Gasoline) is not a power kerosene it is a petroleum product. Kerosene (paraffin oil) is a by product from the production of petroleum.
Two forms of Av Gas left they are 1= Av Gas 100 Green in colour 100+ octane. 2= LL Av Gas blue in colour 100+ octane but lower lead (LL).

You may have mistaken Av Tur (aviation turbine) Jet-A, Jet-A1, Jet-B, JP-4, JP-5, JP-7 and JP-8. These are all power kerosene's (Paraffin oil). Trust me your bike will run like a two legged donkey if you put any type of kerosene in it. These are all Turbine or Jet fuels no good for petrol engines.

Methanol (methyl alcohol) a bio product produced from wood or black liquors etc... when burnt gives of CO2 and water. a completely different AFR required here. Jetting from petrol to methanol requires almost a 300% increase in jet sizes runs clean and mean up 25% power increase just by running Methanol. No longer allowed in many forms of racing because of its hazardous nature. This fuel is also not a Kerosene! :D

some news I read earlier this week on this topic (as a CAMS licence holder I get these notices )

New leaded racing fuel agreement cuts time and costs
24 Nov 2008

From 1 January 2009, a simplified system for the purchase of leaded racing fuel will commence, greatly reducing the burden and costs to CAMS members.

The co-management agreement that currently exists between CAMS and the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts, which enables the purchase of leaded racing fuel by CAMS members through the leaded fuel passbook system, will come to an end on 31 December 2008.

Under the new arrangements, leaded fuel passbooks will no longer need to be presented for the purchase of leaded racing fuel. Instead members will simply need to provide proof of their current CAMS membership when they purchase leaded racing fuel from one of the approved suppliers.

CAMS has been heavily involved in working with the Commonwealth Department to bring about this change and in doing so has ensured that the new agreement benefits CAMS members both in the continued use of leaded fuel and a reduction in cost.

300% sounds a bit excessive and isnt methanol the only fuel allow at speedway because its deemed by that sanction to be so safe.

but then i could be full of shit too.

G'day Chuffed,

Methanol can not be seen burning easily specially in the day time. It has a blue flame. Methanol fires are usually extinguished with water.

Re the jetting side I am not exactly sure of the absolute numbers but it is between 250 and 300% increase over petrol!

Maybe someone who runs methanol could enlighten us???? :)
