still got another 1,000km to go before having to do the oil again. (every 5,000km)

Do you have a chain linker/breaker? If so, can I interest you in a bottle of scotch in exchange for putting some sprockets and a chain on my beasty?

Nope, but I have a mint angle grinder, a clamp, and a nice round peening hammer! So we can do Peen link or split link. Knowing you, it'll be a peen job! :lol: Poof!
Whatever you want mate. If you came over early Sunday AM this week, we could knock it over in half an hour.

BTW, nice offering scotch when you know I don't drink!!!!!! :lol: Knock with a doobie in your pocket!!!! :wink:

Interseting conundrum, these chain link things..
My 9 had a split link but was flattened over the clip.
I just fitted a new chain and sprockets to the 7 and just used the split link. I figure it comes with that and is rated for my bike so it should be fine..

I also used the angle grinder chain splitter technique and the vice grip clamp technique (although it says not too). Never had any probs in the past.
Has anyone actually had a split link fail.?

I have....... in 1993.... chain wrapped around the back sprocket and jammed up the back of the bike..... luckily I was going in a straight line...... Neeeded a new tire and nearly had to wash my under garments...

Nup and I've never bothered doing anything different on any of my road or dirt bikes. I think so long as the clips on the right way they're fine.

Yep, same here. They only cause problems if fitted backwards.....endless chains are a pain in the coight :x

Do me a favour and just check the Nut sizes on the front sprocket nut, and the rear axle nut for me will you? I have all the tools to do most bikes, but sometimes there is an odd size here or there, and I would hate to be half way thru something and not have a socket to suit!
So far my tools change chains and sprockets on 1995 ZX6RF1, Cagiva Allazura 650's, FZR1000's, KLX400's,CBR600's,ZX636 05,Hornet 900,ZX9RE. So I should be able to accom, but you know Murhpy's law!! :wink:

On the clip link thingo! I have seen chains come apart, and the split link is still intact!!! :lol: I have also raced on split links, most do, and never had a failure! I have also traversed the country side at a million Gazelles and done perhaps over 500,000klms on motorbikes over the years and never had one let go on me! I think if the chain is fecked it might be possible, or if it was damaged or not fitted correctly! But other than that I can see no reason why it would ever come off??? :?

But, each to their own. I don't care either way, it just means that you will be getting your hands dirty while I guide you through the process of peening a chain link! Make sure you ask for a chain with a peen link otherwise they will give you the standard split link in the box!!!! :)

I will go split link...

Most likely the reason that chain broke that way was through my negligence to look after it..... It was my first bike and the chain was probably stretched to buggery.... (Not that I have improved much..... I have raped every chain I have ever owned, why change now).

Only ever had a problem with a joining link once.
A mate and i were traveling back from Alice Springs and pulled up in Cooper Peady.Stopped for fuel after sitting on 160-180 and went to lube the chain and noticed the joining clip was gone,faaaaak! :shock:
Anyway,there was no bike shops here and i was worried about the joining
plate comming off.Found this engineering place and asked if the local mechaic could put a dob of weld on each pin to stop the plate from exiting.
I think this guy was used to working on fucking big mining machines and not small intricate bikes.End result was he managed to weld 2 links together. :roll: We managed to unweld the links with an angle grinder,i know a bit ruff but what can you do in the middle of nowhere?
Anyway took off for Port Augusta,sitting again on much more than the speed limit.When i arrived in PA i decided to check the chain again and noticed the joining link plate that was welded up had broken in two,probably for the excessive heat from welding. :roll:
I was able to find a bike shop in PA,so ended up grinding off the old welded joining link and fitting a new link,all was good.
Moral to this story,if i am ever going to do a decent trip,i always take a spare clip with me ,just in case. :wink:

I had a tyre mob fit a rear and put it on arse about. Let's just say that when it let go, I crapped myself, sitting on $1.20 and smashing the bejesus out of the rear hugger. It was a longish push home. :lol:
