bike runs bad after about 30 min.

OK so went for my long ride this weekend, the whole way up it was fine, no worries, then Sunday riding back, we pulled over for a second(i don't think this was the cause), then went on our way. the bike started doing it 10kay from home, so i did what some people suggested, opened the fuel tank, didn't help.

I even stopped off and filled up, still didn't help, i don't think it was ice as it was sitting there idle for a while and still did it.
though its odd that it did it on the colder night part and not while riding up there on a warmer day.

its really bad under heavy load, like if i click it to 3 while doing 30-40, it spits and splutters like its choking and not firing and doesnt pick up speed really... as soon as it passed 3krpm it picked up, however I've also had problems at higher revs, like doing 80 on the freeway click down a few gears and try to accelerate fast.

I don't think its any worse in traffic as it seems to happen on the freeway and when I'm riding as well.

I'm gonna get some NGK platinum's to put in there, though the current spark plugs looked fine.

ill also check the float level and balance the carbs and adjust the mixture screw which i think it could be as well... the only problem is that it only happens rarely and on long rides so its hard to diagnose.

ill work my way though that list you guys posted as well, thanks for that.

will keep you updated.

**UPDATE**

OK, after about 6 months its slowly gotten worse. Take off after about 20 minutes of riding is now really bad under 3k rpm. (it seems ok when first started) im pretty sure after reading that guide SocialSecurity posted its my float level.

So i decided to take it to race replica. tried explaining it to the mechanic there what i thought it was and what it was doing, he however didn't seem to convinced.
I put on the work sheet
shims (which ended up being fine)
Carbs balance
carbs float level
check needle jets

anyway i left it with him to look over it for whatever it may be... i was excited all day about what it would be like when i picked it up.

got there and it didn't sound to positive,
he had balanced the carbs as well and changed the mixture screw to 2 turns rather than the five that it was (I'm hoping my fuel economy is better now)
he was telling me how you never ride under 3krpm anyway

long story short, and over 200 bux later, after riding home and slowing down for an intersection and corers the bike is exactly the same. when in first gear and taking off its choking and spluttering. then it hits 3krp, and i cannot stress how much the bike kicks out under me. its like a rope breaks thats holding it back and it jumps into action.

pretty disappointed at race replica, Chris the owner and Steve are really cool Steve even drove me to the train station after dropping the bike off in his kick ass ute. The girls in spare parts are unreal too, but i should have listened to Rosta about bringing the bike there for a service. as i said disappointed that its still running bad and the mechanic didn't seem to want to see the actual problem and thought it was fine.

will go there again for parts and stuff i need but will stick to doing the services myself i think.

might take it to another place and see if they have any more luck.

Have you taken it back to RR after the service ?
If it's still not right....give them the opportunity to put it right before whining about their service.
I see you specified what you wanted done on the service sheet, what I didn't see was you asking them to look for a "specific" problem ?
All 9's are fluffy below 3k revs
I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it.

mate has the fuel lines been checked?? sumtimes a simple thing like a pinched fuel line may cause it to starve at revs.... the choke isnt stuck is it??

And if all else fails talk to Shannon at Inlne Motorcycles in Newport. Shannon has a VERY good rep with Kwakas. Not trying to take business away from RR but the facts are a few ppl here have been less than satisfied with the mechanical side of the business.

Rossi, I let him know what the bike was doing but also wanted him to check what was on the sheet (as well as diagnose the problem.) I don’t think I should have to take it there a second time. Like everyone else my work schedule is pretty busy and it’s not easy to arrange it. He also said that’s about the best he could get it anyway.

I don't partially want to take it there a second time to get done again.

Personally I felt wasn't being fully listened to when I dropped it off, I said after 20 minutes of riding (or about the time I get to work from home) it starts doing it, not once its warmed up.(I.E. two minutes)
Mechanic was quite polite when I came back to pick it up and had a chat about what he did to it etc.

It’s fine when you've warmed it up and start riding as I keep saying its only once its ridden for a while. i know its defiantly different and its not supposed to do what its doing (as he suggested) or like most nines are.
In short I start riding, under 3k taking off at lights and going round corners = fine.
After twenty minutes or so, taking of at lights its choaking stuttering and feels like its going to die and has now power.

Fuel lines sounds like a good idea to check, I’m pretty sure they’re ok however as the bike is good up in the high rev range and that’s when a general fuel restriction would show though. I think the choke is fine because I can feel the difference when I turn it on and off.

Anyway, as I said Kris and the team are unreal, I’ll have no problems going back for parts and anything else I need to buy.

I don’t want to bad mouth race replica, as they are a good team, I’m just disappointed in the results that I have gotten back. I think thats fair feedback.

PS they do need to get the dyno back online so they can work a little better.

i know how you feel mate coz i have a zx2r and it had the same problem before. the problem was that, the fuel line was kinked but right right inside under the air box. couldnt see it unless you really tried looking for it. this was caused by the dickhead to serviced my bike which he is now sacked.
the 2nd problem was that the breather hole was blocked. its located on the fuel tap. get that blown out with a air gun.

its a fuel problem and that it is getting blocked somewhere. triple check it mate

yeah, its screaming carbie floats to me too, i put it on the worksheet but am unsure if it was done, i was quoted 150 for that alone, he said he also checked the shims which i was also quoted 150 - 200 for..
so 350 for those two items alone(and he did a few other things), either i got a unbelivable deal at 200 dollars or something wasn't done. 12 of that being for the screws that he left in there to check the carbie balanceing.

Gforce - not a bad idea, though the fuel line on the 9 is pretty short and my breather is on the front of the tank, ive blown through the breather and it seemed fine, ive also undone the fuel cap so air could get in but still running bad. i dont think its a breathing problem, but yeah good idea.
also if it where the fuel line I would have thought the problem would still be there especially at high revs, not just under 3k rpm

gonna take it to a place this weekend DynoVerks with Rostas bike and get them to check it out also.

Check throtle cables, mine had loosened of just a touch and played absoulte havoc! Checked everything and a mate who worked on the bike mentioned it could be that, bastard doesn't touch my bike anymore!

Worth a check!

ok so after taking it to RR it was getting much much worse. unrideable worse, it was almost stalling when running and just felt generally bad down low. spending the 220 did nothing, whets worse is he told me the compression on one of the cylinders was low, and was quoting over 2000 for a rebuild if it needed it.

got it to dynoverks, there i felt the guy actually listed to me and checked what i requested.

I had decided there wasn't any point in getting the carbs looked at if there was a problem with the compression, could have been a blown head gasket or anything which would have made the carb overhaul useless.

so I got them to do a leak down test. I was there the whole time they did it and guess what, no leaks, worst cylinder was down 7% which was still in the green section of the meter the guy at RR said compression was down to 85 on one and the others where at 180. (so roughly down 47% from the others)
1.5 hours and 130 dollars (@ 88 bux an hour later) i was now not only 220 worse off but paid for a compression test that i didn't need.

cost so far. 130+220 = 350 bux down the drain.

next thing to do was get the carbs checked out. he corrected the float levels (which i specifically requested on my last job sheet) adjusted the carb balance again as they where out, which the mechanic at RR said he had done. and found the float valves and diaphragms where starting to wear. (still ok) not mentioned by RR. he also found there was a hole in one of the vacuum tubes causing some of the issues down low.

i'm not sure if it feels as powerful as before i took it to RR as now when i open it up in first there is only a little mono, (that may just be in my head though or not cracking it open fast enough probably.)

now its getting what it should be getting on the dyno, and its running a crap load better. he has fixed the problem and they are pretty professional down there.

ended up costing an extra 420 bux, so 770 in total but if i hadn't taken it to RR it would have been almost half that as i never asked for a compression test and only did the leak down test because i was told something was wrong.

Sorry Chris and Trish in spare parts are really cool but as stated by mick_dundee a few people have been less than pleased with the mechanical side.
I will be going back there for parts and accessories, but won't be visiting the mechanic again.

I would highly recommend dynoverks to anyone who needs there bike fiddled with, they even clean it up when its in there. They seemed good, honest and friendly to me.

i had the exact same issue with a certain bike shop that bought BK out.... asked them to clean the carbys on my cbr250, but it was still running shit after that... mechanic says he did a compression test and found that #3 was 30psi down on the others, so no point trying to make it run better cause it never will. ended up buying a comp tester and gave it several goes... guess what.... all within 5psi of each other! tho true, it still ran shit when i sold it

i think its just a easy way out for a bad mechanic who cant be farked tuning a set of carbys but still charges a few hours labour.

thats quite a few good stories ive heard about dynoverks now, especially when it comes to carbys!
