Front brake issue - ZX6 track bike

Postby Sparks_333 » Thu Oct 31, 2013 3:29 pm

Hey all,

So ol' Fluffy wasn't too happy about being woken from her years of slumber and sent roaring around EC a few weeks ago. The front brake was very soft originally and a thorough gravity bleed improved the situation by about 20%. After nearly three sessions the brake lever was nearly reaching the handgrip and, needless to say, no PB's were set that day.

There might be a small weep in the master cylinder, so I'm thinking a brembo reco kit is in order. Any other suggestions? Should I replace the seals for the lines, etc and where is best to get these?

Matt also mentioned that the cylinder might be too small for the brakes, any way to check their compatibility and what might work better?

New piston seals for your calipers wouldn't hurt either

I would go for all of the above and nd go for new brake fluid 'cause your old one probably boiled by the sounds of it... maybe invest on some Castrol SRF. Expensive but worth every penny IMHO. Nothing worse than having no brakes when you really need them!

Agree with the above; turn 2 at EC with limited brakes is interesting!

Yeah Jim that was loads of fun last time... I chose to run off and recover instead of risking one for the photographers =D

That's a great link thanks, I'll try a full overhaul before I go changing the size of the MC. I don't mind feel in the lever, so long as the force is there when I need it.

Hi Sparks,
I'd not run out of brakes before so it sounds like it's gotten worse, I suppose it had been sitting for a _long_ time.
It sounds like a full strip/rebuild of the calipers might be in order?
If you want to try something, there was an original master cylinder in the spares, you could try throwing that on and see if there is any change.
Cheers
Matt

Hey Matt,

I'm trying to find reco kits for the MC and calipers but am having trouble identifying them both to find the parts. I've found some resources suggesting the 6 pot Tok's are prone to mineral deposits pitting the piston and requiring a full caliper replacement.

I'm back at the track in two weeks so if I can't get reco kits for the calipers and MC I'll throw the stock one back on and see how it goes.

Was it a hot day? If the lines are expanding which become more prevalent with age this will give you same effect.

Can try adjusting the lever on the day so at least not to have it against the grip under hard braking.

I think the m/c is a 19x21, the last reco kit I got was from these guys:

http://www.ausit.com.au

you could also try some of the places in the states or canada.

The brakes on my 05 zx6 got to the point that they were so spongy they weren't working properly, so Nelso bought me some Nissin Calipers to put on it. It's the only way to fix them if its got the Tokico calipers as they are rubbish.

God knows what you are on about? 19 means the piston size 18 means the ratio of the lever . ?

A good set of R1 callipers will work Very well as well , you will have to get disc's thou .But using non "radial calipers" it may be the same .
