brakes are a bit funny... little help

Mon Oct 31, 2005 11:16 am

When I pull the brake lever the brakes arnt applying evenly ... they sort increase in bits...

bit hard to explain... its as if the calipers arent applying smoothly...

First thing to try would be bleeding the front brake, just do a general inspection of the pads, and disc rotor.

Failing that it could be a stuck, or sticking piston?

how are the pads?if your down to the last bits there may be a buildup of gunge(old brake pad dust and road debris) on the pistons that make them stick a bit cause theres a lot of piston sticking out of the caliper.

new pads if needed and clean up the pistons will sort it.

I have used fine wet and dry before on some pretty old pistons just makes the baked on crud come off easier but if they have some yuppie coating on them i would be inclined to use something less abrasive and when there all clean looking lube them up with brake fluid and push them back into the calipers with your finger.

Probably will need to bleed the whole system after that one. :D

Also a good time to look at stainless brake lines while you are at it.

Only have to do it every 10000kms or so.

Silly as it might seem Cath's were the same, and it turned out that the lever needed greasing ... I'd have sworn there was a 3 mm step in the sleeve but it was all in the lever.

check the master cylinder too if you are still having trouble and everything else seems fine ... you wouldn't want that to be on the way out.
