Exhaust insulating wrap

Postby oldman » Wed Feb 23, 2011 11:54 pm

My exhaust headers are getting very hot, (glowing red) since I added my Muzzy stainless full system. It is not an issue unless I get stuck in traffic or I am tuning it without a cooling fan. I'm thinking, (I know me thinking is a scarey thought) that exhaust insulating wrap on the exhaust headers for about the first 12 or 14 inches from the head on out may isolate the heat a little better. Any thoughts???? Thanx! I have checked and it is not running lean, if anything it's a little rich.
I've tried drinking 10 or thirty shots of Jim with beer and that doesn't help either. :kuda:

You may carry two handbags to look gay but I feel I need at least three and a pink hankerchef wrapped around my wrist. I don't care about the looks, the heat of my headers is causing damage to the parts close to the headers such as the oil filter, the horn and it burned the paint off my radiator. I realize the heat will still be there I'm just hoping to contain it in a smaller area. Cheers! 5bowtie.gif

wrap will keep the heat in...no doubt about that
but it does cause degradation of the metal in the pipes (steel is worst, stainless not much better)

I wrapped up the headers (extractors) on my V8 race car and after 2 seasons one of the collector pipes
just cracked and collapsed at several of the joints (this is a known problem) I used the older
fibreglass style heat wrap...maybe the new titanium based stuff is better

At 65 years old, WTF is sexuality???
The link pipe is another issue and I am planning to wrap that for the same reason, (melted boots). Degregation of my Muzzy headers is not something I want so I will have to re-think that issue. Thanks for the input, even the instructions on how to look gay. :kuda:
