ZX6R '03 Brake disks

Postby ventura01 » Fri Nov 26, 2010 3:57 pm

Hi all,
Just put new tyres on the wifes ZX6R, and while finishing up putting the wheels back on I was shocked to notice the front brake lever coming nearly all the way back to the bar- this was after a lot of pumping. So I thought I d better suss this out on the road. I got some speed up and applied the front brake -which gripped well (hh pads) but the shuddering was huge. I heard her complain about the shuddering but this was ridiculous! it was always there but so small you could deal with it. So now I reckon new disks are in order, the mech said two months ago that one disk was slighly thinner than the other.....
So does anyone know of a good source for disks that will be value and good quality? I see stuff getting round ebay from china for very little money, then I see stuff in magazines that are like $400 a disk- is there a middle road for disks? the cheap stuff will just warp straight away I figure, and the super expensive stuff maybe excessive for a bike that wont be tracked (as she has a track bike too! mine-ahem) Disks are the one thing Ive never had to replace before.
thanks

Personally I wouldnt buy the cheap disks from ebay, thats just me and there will be some that poo poo that philosphy ;)

BUT, I'd prefer the piece mind, just me.

Galfer or braking waves will be cheaper than OE replacement, you could also try a wrecker to see what they have but I'd measure them first ;) Again, just my thoughts ;)

I have a set of OEM from a '06 zx6r pretty sure they still fit, can have em for real cheap and just get them machined to freshen up...

Mate. The 05/06 model is bigger about 5 to 10mm in diameter. The wheel is the same size. Only the rotors are different.
Still Rolling...

Cool, spacer would fix that pretty easy, same as i used for my new 310mm rotors

OEM is 300mm on the 05/06 did they run 290mm on the '03?

I have forks from an 04 (same as your 03) on my Z1000. I have the spacers to run the Z1000's standard 300mm disks. On the 05 forks you dont need the spacer aparently, so that tells me they are the same size.

I currently have MetalGear discs on my bike and they were reasonably priced and are performing great. Bought them through their online shop www.metalgear.com.au

Check for loose steering head bearings before you replace the discs, that could be the cause of your shudder.

Hey all,
just to fill you in I went with the Metal Gear brake discs and sintered pads. I found their website excellent to order thru and fairly priced ($229 a disc) and they expressed the parts to me, I had them the day after I ordered them! Got the bike back from the mechanic today I rode it for nearly and hour and it felt great, let them bed in a bit and then try them out in the country on the weekend. My mechanic has fitted them before to other bikes and rates them highly. I had the steering head bearings done back in june so I figured I could rule them out and put it down to the disks after the tyres were done and bearings checked.
