Charging problems ZX6RR - again!!

Postby MrFaulty » Thu Feb 25, 2010 6:35 pm

Hi, firstly does anyone know a good auto elec who works on bikes in the newcastle or raymond terrace area?

I have a 2003 ZX6RR which I replaced the regulator in around Christmas. Now it appears as though there is not enough charge, getting just over 11 volts at around 7-8000rpm - buggered if I know, the regulator again or the stator??

ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated as this bike is the only thing keeping me sane at the moment!

Thanks
Ben

If you have a manual for the bike it may show how to diagnose your charging circuit (well mine does but mines really simple). You'll need a multimeter to check the voltages / amps / resistance.

The ZX6RR uses a stator or alternator? If stator do a visual inspection - on mine you could see the burned out poles. Again it's possible to check the stator with a digital multimeter. IIRC it will be something like a specific V @ certain RPM.

Check all the wiring as well. Make sure all the insulation is intact and all connections are clean and tight. Any loose terminals either tighten or replace.

Realistically you probably need a manual if you're going to do your own diags / repairs - makes life a lot easier :D

Don't worry about insanity. I don't suffer from it - I love every minute of it :D
I don't like the term insane - I prefer mentally hilarious!

I agree you need to find out where the problem is and a good voltmeter and a manual is the key. It's possible if you had a bad regulator and it was overcharging it blew the diodes in the charging circuit. Sorry I could not be of more help.

Thanks, took it to B&C at Boolaroo, they reckon it is just a blown regulator again - this time I am putting a new one in, hope it works!

Glad you got it sorted out. I never buy used electronics as I have had similar experiences with used shit. It still would not hurt to buy a digital volt/ohm meter as it is good for all sorts of trouble shooting.

Are you still using the original battery, or has it been replaced at some point ??

I just replaced it - thought that was the problem as last time the reg stuffed up it puut out 18 volts (or thereabouts) so I figured it had fried the battery.

18v, your lucky you did not fry your ignition. I had a piece of shit Cheverolet Camero that was charging at 18v. Unfortunatley I fried the coil, the ignition module and blew out both headlights before I found the problem.

mmm OK - well if the new battery is still good, you are probably lucky....

You probably need to get the alternator output checked - if the regulator keeps frying, there might be something out of whack with the alternator ......
