Right then from reading through this I see that the resolution was a new battery (?) Still good?
I started mine 10 days ago no worries but now refuses to do anything but fire on one cylinder every three revolutions.
It has a good strong spark, has fuel - hold a lighter to the exhaust as you crank and I get a satisfying flame with a "zzzzzuuuuuzzzzzhhhhhhwwwwoooooooommp" down the pipe. Checked the rotor and the photoelectric pickup and all is well. The battery is fully charged and still connected to mains power via the battery charger but the arsehole still will not fire. "Start Ya bastard" directly down the carbs produces nothing more than a more satisfying flame out the rear end with lighter held against it :D
Havent tried bumping it down the street as yet but the dead battery theory does have merit. If the starter takes all the available charge then only a weak spark could be produced with whatever else is available and of course under compression that spark could be absolutely nothing.......
get back to ya. All of this was just thinking aloud really through the keyboard I suppose.
I got a sweater for my birthday. I realy wanted a moaner or a screamer.

Perhaps the starter has a poor earth and therefore draws more current?

Farked if I know just guessing.....aloud again
