Removing Radiator Fan '96 ZX6

Postby Mike » Sun Mar 08, 2009 9:29 am

Hi all,

Currently building my '96 ZX6 track bike.

I have a quick question for the mech heads... Can I remove the radiator fan permanently? Seeing its a track only bike it wont be sitting in traffic etc etc. So is the fan in integral bike of the bikes cooling system or like my old bike, it only does anything when the bike is stationary while running and not getting any air flow, in which case I could take it off :kuda:

Thanks,
Mike.

i removed the radiator fan off my vfr400 race bike, gets a bit hot on a warm day, but its ok (just need a better radiator cap as mine shit  )but in sayin that some of the guys come into the pits and their fans goin,,, i think most the guys with newer bikes leave them on :kuda:

the benefit on my bike is i dont have to dismount the lower radiator to do oil and filter and plug change, also some guys reckon air flow to you engine is better without the fan and shroud in place so your engine gets more air :?
either way its much for muchness :kuda:

But it's Water Cooled not Air Cooled! MY bike often omes into the Pits after a workout with the fan working overtime, but then most of my radiator fins are bent!

yer it is water cooled, but that doesnt mean that air wont cool it down, maby not as effective as a fan, though if your cooling system is good the air coming through the radiator should keep it cool enough, my bike only relieves coolant to overflow when im sitting in the pits after a session when its idling, so i guess radiator fans would stop that, but out on the track its fine sits right on half even on the hot days, so im happy :kuda:

Stripping everything I dont need.

If I dont need this to stop my bike overheating then it will come off. Just trying to find out if it can be done without causing major overheating problems. :D

My wife and I both have ZX6Rs as track bike's '95 & '96 and both have the fans removed.

Neither of us have over heating problems.

If your bike over heats at the track you got other problems going on rather than not having a fan.
Unless you sit in pit lane all day with the engine running.

I still have mine fitted and operable. Only cause I have changed anything since it was a SS bike and they needed them back then to be legal. Other than that, it could come off. But it's just more work I don;t want to do!
