ZZR1100 with a few problems

Have just purchased a 1993 ZZR 1100 D1 that has come with a few problems...

1. Bike runs rich and has a backfire problem... Is there an easy soution to this problem?

2. There is a crack in the Crankcase that has been fixed for the short term with a bit of Liquid Metal... good stuff.. However I would love to get my hands on a second hand crankcase .. or maybe even a new engine .. I don't know how long the crack has been there and if it has caused more damage inside the engine... Any suggestions. :(

3. I are the engines for the D1 and C models the same? Can I swap and change parts? :?

... Taking it in to the bike shop in 2 days to see what they say....

Has it got the original exhaust? Just wondering if the previous owner had aftermarkets, changed the jetting and then left it the same when the old pipes went back on for sale... or am I subscribing to conspiracy theories again?

It has had an after market exhaust put on.. (single pipe).. I am unsure if it has been re-jetted.

just got it back from the bike shop... and they had to re-sync. the carbs... goes alot better.. still a little backfire though!

D and C model engines are pretty much the same and will fit either bike. Just make sure you use the correct front sprocket for the engine-they differ there. If doing an engine swap I'd look for a ZZR1200 one. They go in, but have to lower the engine to do valve clearances. Did anyone direct you to http://www.bigbikeworld.com? Best ZZR1100 resource on the web. :D

Yeah, I did. He got ONE reply to his thread. I'm a bit dissapointed that more of 'em didn't offer him help, actualy. :(

There used to be a French-Canadian guy on there called Claude, who was an absolute guru with all things ZZR. Someone pissed him off, so they have lost their number one expert, unfortunately. :(

A lot of backfires are due to an airleak, check all your connections for discolouration or (if easy) just pull apart and put a smear or sealant.
Check nuts at the head/header interface are all tight (JIC).

Yeah have been there and seen the picks of an engine break down... amongst other things.

the more I ride the bike the more I am convinced that a new engine is the way to go. However the bike is not in the best condition overall... might be easier to find a new bike...

looking at around 2000 bucks just for a second hand D1 engine... then the cost of installing...

a little unsure at the moment.
