oil seal leak

Hi all,got a minor oil leak in the shaft behind the front sprocket(transmission).is it a big job to replace the seal?or can it be done by taking off the sprocket,drain the oil ,then remove seal and refit new one?any hints on removing the seal?
any info much appreciated.

I've done it on a GPX750, so if its anything like that, it'll require the shift lever to be taken off, a half dozen bolts removed (mine had a couple flat faced bastard-to-remove bolts i had a hell of a time removing, hopefully they dont have that on the z750.) the up/down rocker mechanism on the selector shaft removed, the clutch slave removed as well as any coolant tubes/pumps, etc that are in the way of removal).

If you go as far as to replace that, you might as well replace the seals on the clutch pushrod as well as clean it up too. as your not likely to replace those just on their own anytime soon.

If i didn't have that bastard-bolt problem (i wasted hours with that bullshit, HOURS!) i would say that i would have had it sorted in under two hours, thats including removing bodywork too, so on a Z it ought to be faster.

pretty sure its the transmission shaft seal,inside the front sprocket,not where the shift lever seal is...

Take the advise - DO BOTH!! for $4.00 a seal at the local bearing shop why stuff around??

Check that the sleeve behind the drive sprocket is not too badly worn.. You can turn it around on some bikes to get another life otherwise speedy sleeve or replace. [If you can feel a groove worn by the seal with your finger nail it's not gonna last long before it leaks again!]

On some bikes the neutral safety switch leaks also(ie Yammies) which is the plastic jobbie just under the gearbox output shaft/drive cog.

My advise was exactly that, spend a bit extra now and save yourself the risk of going through the bullshit of having to tear it apart for the other seal in 10 thousand km time. Or not, it may not leak. but keep in mind that while your taking it apart, you may indeed fuck it up by bending the seal permanatly due to the seal having hardened due to age.

Perfect example is i replaced the headers on my old bike, and part of the process is wigling it around in close proximity to the radiator outlet bar. In the process of doing this i managed to dislodge the o rings 1/10th of a degree causing a coolant leak that took me months to track down. As soon as those o rings were replaced, voila!! no more leak!
