Will WD40 actually breakdown the rust?

i think it does. i haven't cleaned my chain since i got the bike.

might give it a go one day.

I use Kero when machining Aluminium.

thats what our head toolmaker tells me....
and kero with fine wet'n'dry paper is really good for getting rust off
any ferrous material....

But if it was a cutting agent, you wouldn't need the wet 'n' dry... surely?

Appears that lubricant and cutting agent are used interchangably in the machining industry... from what I can gather cutting agents are used to cool, lubricate and in some circumstances, reduce surface tension while machining.

Getting kero on your sprockets is NOT going to do them any harm. Certainly no more harm than getting chain oil onto them.

I'd just like to clear that up...

Kero and Diesel are effectively a very light oil. Hence kero being used as a cutting 'lubricant'. It has no 'cutting' or 'abrasive' characteristics at all. This is also why kero or diesel will be OK to clean o-ring chains. It won't have the tendancy to 'dry' out the rubber like petrol or alike. And it won't cause any wear of chains and sprockets.
I have been around AVTUR (Aviation Turbine Fuel) for most of my career and you will be interested to know that it is possible to run kero (avtur) in your diesel engines. (50/50 is common!) There is little difference between the two.
My 2 cents worth is........ why waste your $$$ using WD40 to clean your chain, when a much cheaper (and documented) method is to use kero (or diesel)???
BUT if your using diesel, don't forget all the problems car manufacturers are having with seals in fuel systems with this new low sulfur diesel!!

Just one other thing...... From my MX days, I never lube'd my chain as I was tought from an early age that it would only attracted dirt and wear the chain/sprockets quicker! The chains seemed to last really well too??!??

There is no Kero in WD40 and I get it for free

Thats a point you have there Doc, especially considering the 0 & X ring type chain is "sealed", but if a no lube policy was adopted your chain would start to rust in no time

I use Motorex 611 chain clean. It is in an aerosol (so easy to apply), safe for o rings and only $19 a can ordered from MCAS. Spray on while on the rear stand with a bit of cardboard underneath to catch the mess. The chain is spotless afterwards. Then I lube it with Motul chain lube (have found this one the best and easiest to use.)

To add to that wendy clean the chain, dry it then leave it for a few hours to dry even more, then ride the bike to warm up the chain, then lube it while it is warm the lube will penetrate better & not fling off as much
The white Motul seems to be go, I have found that if applied correctly it dries white & makes it easy to see when more is required as the white will disappear.
