rebuild parts list.

Postby chrisw » Tue May 13, 2008 6:55 pm

Ok, so im preparing to get my engine fully rebuilt in a few months and it will take 6-8 weeks of sitting at the shop to source some of the parts, so they said its in my best interest to find some if i wish, or if i have preferences/cheaper options.

this is on my GPz750 air cooled donk.

so i'm wondering, anyone that has rebuilt and engine before or got it done. i need a parts list of as much as possible of whats required to bring a motor back to its past glory and last another 80-100 000km.

with my limited knowlege ive come up with a few parts, can you help with the rest? and whats an approx price of the majority of parts? 1500-2000?

pistons, pins and related parts (rings etc)
would my conrods be fine or should i just do them while everything else is being done?
full gasket set
camshaft / reground camshaft
valves, springs etc.
those half bearing sleeve things for the crank.
im not sure what all the bearings and seals are in the motor, but the bearings :P....
clutch kit (mines fine, but why not while im there, its only 119 bucks)
starter motor gear (needs fixing anyways)
primary chain
gearbox bearings? (on this line, is there anything in the gearbox cheap/nececcary to replace...? the gears all feel fine with no whining.)

Might be worth while giving peoples a history of the engine, whay does it need to be rebuilt? Siezed? Rusted? Sitting around doing fuck all for 20 years etc, or some pics then some of the techos here might be able to pinpoint your needs a bit better... basically what's been typed is as vague as the space between hoffy's ears...

no probs.

basically the engine is in decent condition, the only real problems are the starter clutch and the primary chain.

however i was planning on doing a semi ground-up rebuild on the bike in the near future, its going to be my bike for a long long time and want it back to near perfect condition, accepting most cost (ie, id rather spend 3500 getting an engine rebuilt than getting a second hand engine at less than half the cost).

its also going to be minorly modified but within daily rider limits.

the primary chain drive is the main concern, im not sure what kind of wear tear and damage goes on with really worn ones, this one is pretty damn noisey so it was going to be inspected later on this month anyways, but getting all new seals, bearing and such was a high priority as well, so why not rebuild and have a great bike for another 60 000-100 000km.

as you can probably tell from the pics in my progress thread under the GPz forum, its also in a state of uglyness from sitting around half its life, so a perfect condition, new looking engine to go with the rebuild im doing on the rest of the bike is a high priority.

plus as its going to be my main form of transport i want something with some modern parts put back in for reliability, instead of the original seals, gaskets, bearings, worn internals from 1982 with unkown history and only a service record from its 60 000km service.

tech specs are as followed.

engine: Air cooled, four stroke, transverse four cylinder, DOHC, 2 valve per cylinder.
cap and bore: 738cc, 66 х 54 mm
comp: 9.5:1
carbies: 4x 36mm Mikuni
power: roughly 80 as stock, but has been rejetted with a custom 4-1 system, butt dyno says more but at higher RPM, loss at lower.

what type of tech specs do you want? i can actually dig up the manual and get some good stuff, this is just from a generic spec site.

edit: sigh, i need more coffee, i reach "techs" from "techos" ... my bad. either way general pointless info :).
