Battery Angel Fitted - Ever seen One ?

OK, since I had a lot of problems in the past with my bike not charging, and being stranded, or jump starting after screwing up my knees pushing the Faarkin thing up and down steep hills 5 times in a row, once I fixed everything, a mate told me about a thing called a Battery Angel.

What this Widget does is to monitor your battery charge state, and if it ever drops to 1/3 charge, it has a trip switch, that stops any further discharge of the battery.

So... If you come to start your bike, and nothing happens, go the Battery Angel, flick the switch back to "ON", and hey presto, you have juice to start your bike!

So as long as your Alternator is working, you can ride home no probs, and fix the problem in your Garage, instead of the side of the bloody road (If you're lucky)

I fitted one to my ZXR250, I was lucky as the bike has a little tray right behind the battery and Junction Box:

Basically, the unit acts as a break on the Positive feed from the battery, and stops any drain from the battery at all, if tripped.

To turn it back on, all I need to do is pop the seat, open the lid to the Battery Angel, and flick the Switch:

To fit it, all I had to do was secure it inside the tray (Done by securing via Tie Wraps, there are slots in the device for this exact purpose (Tie wraps provided), then connect 1 Yellow wire to the Battery Positive, and the other Yellow wire to where the original Battery Positive lead went.

Then only one other wire (The thin Black wire), that allows the switch to operate when required.

The Battery Angel has a test button to make sure all is working after installation - Works a treat !

I reckon for $90 it's a bargain ....

Anyway, if anyone is interested, I can get in touch with the guy that manufactures them, and if I get enough orders, I am sure I could get them slightly cheaper

Oh, I forgot to add obvious reasons why your battery might go flat, even if your charging system was healthy:

If you don't ride for a long time, and it is hard to get to the battery to disconnect it.

If you leave your headlights on.

Might look into this little baby a bit more. Be interesting to know what exactly "1/3 charge" is in terms of voltage etc

my bikes clocked up 9000km... not bad considering ive had it since april last yr.. so 9 months.... and 6 months of that i didnt have a license (and it may of had a few starts to keep it going.. but not much)

NFI what my bike has done since I bought it actually but it gets ridden almost daily as a commuter, was hoping to get some twisty k's under it's belt heading to the confusion rally today but no cash to lash

Yeah, It got my interest as all other devices just seem to be a meter that you can just look at to see the battery state, first one I saw that actually tries to preserve some power

I just realized yesterday, it can also be a crude type of immobilizer

If I flip the switch to cut the power, and put my seat back on, if someone tries to hot start it, they would have no idea why the bike was not starting !

Unless of course they bust the seat off, but that would look pretty suss........

I am trring to get specs from the guy who makes them, so I can see exactly how it monitors the battery, abd decides to cut the juice.

I've got a similar gizmo on the Kombi. The ole VeeDub runs two batteries, and this jobbie will isolate battery two where the main starting battery is charging - once batt 1 is charged, it switches and charges batt 2. When I turn the car off, it isolates batt 1 and runs off batt 2. I should never be able to flatten either battery and the alternator never has to charge two batteries at once, which would cause an overload.

Hey Haay !!

Well, I got to see the Angel working first hand last night ...

Came home, after riding in the wet, hence low revs all the way home, not enough to charge the battery properly.

Got to my garage roller door, stopped the bike, opened the door, tried to start the bike, sluggish but started.

Parked the bike in the garage, tested the Angel, tripped OK.

Went inside, then out 20 mins later to go and get dinner, the Angel had tripped (Must have thought I was on 1/3 charge).

Flicked the switch, bike started lovely !

After a 20 minute run, with high revs, got home, bike started with a nice high speed cranking speed - Sweeet.

I checked out the link, the model they show as the only one they have doesn't look much like the on you have fitted. I generally do enough miles to keep the bikes charged up, but this would be handy as an immobiliser. Also, the ZRX1200R is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to heavy for this old fart to push more than a few paces.
