Shims, how do you know if/when you're bike needs them?

Hi Toby go see a good mate of mine at Lloyd Penn Motorcycles at Artarmon (Punch St) I think it is.
He has been in the game a looooong time & wont stuff you aroud Just drop my name "Rob from RT".
I have known Lloyd for 20 years & would trust him with any work required

My Z1000 (bored out ZX9R engine) is booked in to have it's 24,000km valve clearances checked & a throttle body synchronisation. I do all the other servicing myself...
I'm sceptical as to whether any mechanics actually go to the bother of checking the clearances.
Is there a way for me to make certain that they do the job?
I was thinking of asking them to take a photo of it (with my camera that I would leave) as I can pretend that I've never seem inside an engine before...
Or...
Can I put some paint/ nail polish on one of the head bolts to see if it gets scratched during removal?
I work waaay to hard for my money but am I being too pedantic about this?
p.s. It's booked in at Sharp Tune Kwaka in Dandenong.

Print a copy of the valve map which is attached earlier and ask thenm to fill in the details

Got my shims done yeasterday. Got a new bloke to do it and got to tell you what a fantastic job he has done Cost me $150 ( half the cost of the last time the cams had to be touched ) to check the shims ( two needed adjusting/replacing) and balance the carbs, he said the carbs were way out and the old girl should go a bit better well he wasent wrong Wont be going anywhere else from now on so if you need anything done in the north west of Tas give Graham at Caltex Spreyton a go he realy knows his sh*t

Had my valve clearances & throttle body synchronisation done last Friday at Sharp Tune Kawasaki.
The bike needed a few shims:

The throttle body synchronisation made a noticable difference with the starting & idling performance being much better.
Top job to Sharp Tune for being the most professional bike dealer I've ever been to.

I'm not sure if he is still the owner, but it used to be Albert Tehnepe's place. (Some may recognise his name from the entry and results lists in Post classic racing.) Albert has always been a good bloke and I have never heard a bad story about him. I used to wholesale stuff to him and he always had time for his clients and never delivered anything other than a bang up job from what I saw. He can steer pretty good and ain't half bad at building fast motors too!!!!

I had the Workshop Manager, Paul do the work on my bike & was nothing less than amazing!
You can always tell a well managed company, when the sales guys have been there for years...
