What mods to do to a ZX6r 01 Model?

Postby nicko » Wed Dec 05, 2007 10:30 pm

Hi Guys,
just bought a 01 ZX6R as my upgrade from my zzr - What upgrades should i be looking at?
It currently has a pipe masters exhuast and thats it

What air filter should i go for - BMC or K&N - Where is the best place in vic to get one?
Is it worth doing a jet kit on them?

I have already ordered a few dress up items like some Blue Bar ends, crash knobs, bubble screen etc
And am waiting for some emails back regarding pyramid plastics solo seat cowel and hugger.

Also - with the flashing LED lights can you just add a resistor inline to act as a load for the voltage so that they flash at a regular rate? If so does anybody know roughly what resistance i should be looking at?

Thanks for you help!
Hope to be more active on here now that i have a decent bike!
Regards
Nicko

with regards to your l.e.ds u can buy a replacment flasher unit from ebay like this http://cgi.ebay.com.au/LED-Flasher-Rela ... dZViewItem that will save a bit of mucking around with resisters - i have some on my zx10 and will be taking them off after last ride as no one could actually see them in the day time :(

after learning the hard way with my last bike and before u spend money pipe, filter, jet kits I would think about getting some suspension work done!

cheers,

pat.

G'day Nick,

These are good bikes, and a fantastic step-up from your ZZR. My advice at this stage would be to spend you hard-earned on rider training rather than seeking a couple of extra HP through big dollar items like full systems, filters, jet kits, dyno tuning, etc. With a slip-on can and stock jetting / filter a healthy one will punch out 95+ RWHP. A really *worked* one might make 110 RWHP and that's going to cost more than buying an '06 636 with 110 RWHP stock (and a chassis designed to cope with the HP).

To keep it in perspective I'm hoping to get about 100-105 RWHP out of Cath's J series zx6r trackbike with a full system, K&N filter, factory pro jet kit, carby rebuild, 12,000 km old engine and plenty of time on the dyno to tweak it all, and even then I'm not 100% certain we'll quite make it. Once it's finished her tracky won't owe that much less than her '06 636 road bike and won't be as quick

I got an electronic flasher unit from Repco for $15 that sorted out the fast flashing indicators. I fucked around for ages with resistors, then with potentiometers (variable resistors) trying to get the flash rate right and didn't get anywhere, Rossi pointed ne in the direction of a Narva part# 68212BL which took about 10 mins to fit and works a treat.

As Pat said, your suspecnsion is another good place to spend money, and a top-spec rebuild might cost you about a grand but will be worth more seconds per lap than five times that amount on engine mods.

I'm guessing from the blue bar-ends you ended up with a green one? How many KM's? How 'bout a pic? If you need any help with it yell out, I recently rebuilt a wrecked one and turned it into this beast:

good bit of kit those 01mdl ZX6Rs, i had one, i did the suspension and brake lines with wave rotors and it was a different bike. I would go with suspension and brake mods.

Gday Dave,
thanks for the advice- Yeah ill atke her to broadford soon and then the island - I have a mate that races the 125 Honda GP bikes and a Honda VFR400 at Hartwell - He has given me a bit of advice but was more so looking just to make my bike a bit more unique!
I am looking at some race fairings from race glass in keysborough atm. I actually have a Blue ZX6r and have just ordered the solo seat cowel, blue hugger and tail light clip (made by pyramid plastics) from streetfighter bikes. he is substantially cheaper that Australian Motorcycles Accessories (pyramid plastics dealer) even including shipping from canada!
Ill throw some photos up this weekend when i get home!

Just be carefull with the bubble screen, i had a clear one on my 00mdl and i left it in the sun for a while and it started to melt the dash, took me ages to work out what caused it, i thought it was something electrical then i realised the bit where it bubbles works like a magnifing glass and it made the dash melt.

AND iridium tint ones!!

tip- either dont park in direct sunlight, or keep a rag under ur seat to throw over ur screen, or under ur screen across ur cluster!!

I generally throw my jacket over the screen, or my back protector underneath (or often both). Cath's Ermax DB screen actually came with a white plastic protector to slip onto the dash which seems to work too.

i was going to make a cover for the dash after it happened but i sold the bike so i didnt worry about it. But either one of the above mentioned ideas will work.
