Frothy fork oil

Postby goanna_38 » Wed Apr 18, 2007 7:27 pm

Here’s something I haven’t come across before (possibly because I have never really had to open my forks up except to strip them) and have noticed twice recently. Did the Race Tech Cartridge emulator swap in my forks and am now going through the whole open forks up, pull valve, adjust preload on valve, replace valve and reassemble fork tops. The last two times I have done this the oil appears to be aerated. Oil level is actually higher than where I set it and when you pull oil out to set the level it has fine bubbles in it. Am I being fussy or have I used the wrong (Motul Expert) fork oil? Oil is only 6 months old so it can’t be old age. The first time I noticed it I had just got back from a ride so the oil had a good excuse to be a bit agitated, but the second time it had been quietly minding it’s own business in the shed for two days and was just as bad. I can’t see a big company like Motul making dodgy fork oil but you never know. Anyone else come across this? Panic or leave it alone?

I can only assume from the deafening silence that this hasn’t happened to anyone else or that I’m the only person to notice it. Fair enough.

I regularly pull my forks down and haven't had airated oil in them. I used Silkolene oil...

Was thinking it might be worth changing brands. Fork oil is funny stuff. Years ago I used fork oil (can't remember the brand) that was yellow and smelled like (I'm not making this up) bananas. After 2 years it was the dirtiest grey colour I had ever seen. Still smelled like bananas though.

Prolly a bit late on this one... Silkolene and Motul have utterly different ISO and VI ratings, the former should respond/recover better - there is a chart on IBSF that PVD made up from data we all provided, with a few other esoteric brands having been added after...
