Oil leak - Maybe gearbox.

Postby idh959 » Sat Jan 13, 2007 4:26 pm

Hi everyone,

It's been a while since I was last on here and its good to see some of the same old sigs.

Now to my problem. I've found a small oil leak, a drop of oil from small sprocket casing. I dont know exactly where it may be coming from but I am guessing the gearbox. The oil in the engine is clean so there is no bad stuff getting in. Since I dont have the expertise or tools to look at it myself, where can I take the bike in western sydney to get that fixed, and a major service at the same time? or I might give SPM a go.

Any suggestions?

its a 98 zx6r

Cheers all, and happy new year!

Sure it's not chain oil/lube that has accumulated on the inside of the cover? That area on my bike looks pretty shocking and I'm hoping that it's chain oil :)

MiG... you and me both, i have the same problem, and i think it could be chain lube.

i ultra lubed it up, finishing off the last bit of the can, and id get a few drops when stopped, but it didnt drip much at all today... btu yeah, all around my centre stand and left exhaust is COVERED in scum XD.

Thanks Guys,
Its definitely not chain lube. I use maxima wax, that doesnt flick or collect everywhere. I took the fairings off and found that the leak is coming from higher up in the engine, just below the carbs I think. Its with the mech at the mo. Hopefully should get it back tuned, serviced and leak free.

In our case it is chain lube. Last weekend I took the cover and the sprocket off and cleaned it all. Bloody hell it had a lot of shit there. Dirt + lube. Now that it's clean and I've lubed the chain again, it's easy to see that there's lube splattered on the cover that is collecting at the bottom. So don't worry.

Also another possibility is a leaky output shaft seal. Either a mind numbingly annoying job, or a totally shit one, depending on the engine design.

the latter if the engine cases require splitting to replace, the former of the output shaft goes through a sideplate cover (most bikes nowdays do this for ease of replacement & access to the goodies inside). The only shitter about this is taking the front sprocket off, and removing any seizes up bolts. Wasted *HEAPS* of time fixing this on my gpx through a lack of tools and mangled bolts.

another sign its this is when it doesnt leak when its running, etc. But when you put it on its sidestand after a half decent run, you start noticing a few drops on the ground where it "left its mark", basically oil on the outout shaft gets past the seal, leaks down the sprocket and trickles its way down the bike to the lowest point before dripping off.
