anyone want 350 $$$

Postby zx2r001 » Tue Sep 05, 2006 5:13 pm

Hi all new to the forums..JUst purchased myself a zx2r as a run about.Problem is i cant get it to start. The previous owner did not run it for close to 8 months.I have given it oil.(he had drained the oil)...changed the plugs and recharged the battery..still no luck..

So what i want is someone to show me how to get the carbs of,clean and balance them and hopefully get the bike going.I dont have many tools or much knowledge in this stuff.

The bike shop tells me 350 to do so i am seeing if someone out there might be interested in makin a few bucks rather than given it to the dealership.

cheers :)

Dont go to dealership.

There should be some good independant mechanics who will give you better service then the dealerships.

I'll put my hand up for that if you want some help and don't mind waiting a little. I don't live too far away (i'm in arncliffe). but i've got a bit of a whacked schedule with working shiftwork and the soonest i could do it is something Fri morning if you can squeeze it in, or maybe Sun evening (or anytime over the following 3 days which i've got off).

And no, i'd not charge you $350, maybe a slab of beer, max ;-).

hell i'd be happy if he supplied the consumables (degreaser/carby cleaner, not the OTHER consumables) and maybe a $50 if it took over an hour to sort it out. The idea is to help the laddie get it goin :-).

basic idea, drain floats and maybe use the rest of the tank of fuel as weed killer (old fuel) as a precautionary measure, and if zero choke, WOT and a shitload of startyabastid doesn't fix it, you've got bigger worries than what condition the carbies are in.

if it starts but doesnt go, or is crap as hell, then start looking into carby condition/cleaning.

Thankyou guys for the offers.mike-s
i got your pm cheers mate.Well today i got off my ass and had as go.I worked out how to get the carbies of,took them apart nd cleaned everything wih carb cleaner. The pilot jets etc where putrid also the air fuel mix screws where 5 turns out from seated.(i reset them at 2 turns out). One thing i noticed was that there was no washers or anything on the needle.Could this be a problem?.Anyway put everything together and tried to start...Nothing..only starter motor..

The battery is now dead so i am recharging it.The fuel line from the tank to the carb seems fine.

I will check in morning to see if the float bowls have fuel in them,if they do that would cancel a fuel line prob right?

As far as the fuel tap goes..Prime gives constant flow of fuel whilst on and reserve only trickle?Cause hat is what i seem to get.

As i said in the 1st post the previous owner had drained the oil. When i went to put new oil in i took the plug of 2 c if anything in there..About 400 ml of what seemed like oil but wih petrol in it as it was quiet diluted came out .Is this normal?

Alot of questions i realise but i would appreciate any advice.
mike-s
i will give you a buzz tomm mate...

cheers

It's often the simplest things that give you grief. Eight months shouldn't be enough to stop a four stroke. dodgey fuel or otherwise. I've got a YZ250F which is about the highest strung four stroke you can get and it fires straight off after 10 months with old fuel in it.

If you recharged the battery and it went dead pretty quickly get yourself a new one,(you're gonna have to anyway), whack it in and hit the start button. I'm tipping you don't have enough power to turn the starter and generate a decent spark.

Try Apollo batteries or someone similar rather than a bike shop for your battery, the code will be on it.

If you get desperate and need a bike shop give Mick at Castle Hill Motorcycles a call, he's pretty fair.

Good luck

ok..well i did a compression test on the bike gave the following readings 55/70/110/50.Damm i thought the bike was stuffed..Anyways a guy in a import centre in bne suggested that as the bike has been sitting so long the pistonts etc may be stuck. He suggested suburu upper engine cleaner.

I left the stuff for a few days and checked the compression again everything above 150 psi.Got a new battery and tried to start ..fired straight up.Shit load of smoke but was told this was to be expected.

Bad rattle was coming from the engine this was diagnosed as streched cam chain.Anyways bike is at shop getting new cam chain apart from that the mechanic says the bikes motor is all good.

I would like to thank mike-s for all his help with this problem. He went out of his way to help...

cya on the road...
