Speedo Problem

The speedo on the 9 stopped working last week. Was working fine and then nothing. No flickering or indications it was going, just stopped.

First thought was a snapped cable. Simple enough, buy a $22 cable. Screw it on both ends, away we go. When I pull the old cable out its fine, no signs of wear or dryness.

The speedo end is fine. There is no signs of wear on the gears that drive the speedo itself, and when I turn the cable manually I see the expected flicker on the needle.

At the other end where the cable goes into the housing on the front wheel, the notched end of the cable seats properly, but the cable doesn't turn when the wheel turns. Fiddling with it, I can get the cable to turn sometimes, but usually not.

The manual is a bit vague about the inner workings in the housing, but it does suggest to replace it and not try to repair it. I've sprayed WD40 in there but no joy. I can't remove the housing to have a look without taking the wheel off, which I can't do with the gear I have.

Its pointing towards needing a new gizmo on the front wheel. Has anyone got any other suggestions or had any experience with this problem?

i'd say in the long run plain replacing it would be best for your sanity.

By your process of elimination it sounds like it has broken the drive down the bottom. BUT does the tacho work etc. I mean the needles "moves" but my dick twitches too and it dont work too well...

Dont know about the 9 but (other) kwaks have two "dogs" on the wheel rim that slot into the drive. I dont think you could break them off as they are cast part of the wheel. It should be easy to pull the front wheel off with the tool kit (but it IS shit dont use it). Put your bike up on a trolley jack (if you didnt get one of the great Kaneg stands) GET SOMEONE TO HELP. You dont want a bodgey speedo AND scratched fairings and bent levers.
I am betting you may find some ummmm filings in there
You are going to HAVE to pull the front wheel out, you have NO choice sorry.

One assumes it didnt "stop" last time the front wheel was out?
Or after a wheelstand etc. etc.
