Ok, who's up for unluckiest bugger of the year? Went to change my coolant today. Found a leak in the gap between the the 2 halves of the thermostat housing. Problem is, the facia piece that the windscreen screws into has a couple of pieces broken off. To fix that I need to to get a new screen and glue up the broken pieces. Not to mention the hassle of taking of the wholee fairing. So an easy job turns into a major headache. Not sure how lucky I am. Bike is broken but not terminally. If I hadn't decided to change coolant today, how far would I have got before it heat siezed? Still going to cost me money, so not sure how lucky I am supposed to feel. I must have run over a Busload of Chinamen in a previous life.

Despite the initial headache, finding a minor problem before it becomes a major one is lucky.

None of us like even minor problems, but they happen so we deal with them. Better that then have to replace/rebuild an enitre motor.

So far so good. Managed to get the thermostat housing out without having to pull off the top half of the fairing. Found out why it was leaking. I had assumed one of two possibilities. Either the O-Ring was buggered or the housing itself had distorted and was allowing water to seep through. Turns out it was the third possibility. One of the previous owners was a moron. Instead of an O-Ring to seal it, he/she had filled the groove with gasket goo. Just as well I suppose because the thermostat (at least that was still in there) was on it's last legs. Not opening fully and would have had me pulling it apart sooner or later anyway. Just have to wait for shop to get thermostat now. Probably Thursday with any luck.

Original. Haven't got it yet but local Kawasaki shop (Lockyer Mowers and Motorcycles at Gatton) said it is about $36 for thermostat, so not too bad. Hopefully have it in time to fix bike by the weekend.

I bought the same old common commodore, the parts are always cheap and interchangable with all the models

good luck with it.
