Lubing your chain!

g'day guys
i was just wondering how much and where is teh best place to put oil i have in a can..i cleaned teh wheels this morning and used the oil on the chain i gave most parts and hte rear sprocket a small squirt of oil, then when i arrived at my dest teh rear wheel had a nice coat of black oil!! i cleaned it off cause i was at a mates, but back at home, prob 1/4 of wat it first was... i was wondering wat is the best way to lube the chain and how much i need and how often to also minimize the wheels getting dirty!

try a spray on lube like belray etc, doesn't flick off all over your wheels

becuase it is an o-ring chain can i clean it with degreaser or will it dry out the grommets ?
the degreaser is tha awesome $2 can stuff from super cheap!

that depends on who you ask

i got told to clean it with kero only, then someone else said degreaser is ok, and someone else told me not to clean it at all (and he was told by the ppl that make the chain not to clean it)

So i'd say it's personal choice,if you want to clean it i'd go the kero firstly (it's cheap too and seems to be the most popular choice on here it's not quite as harsh as the degreaser.
I didn't clean mine for 15months, and it survived

i have been known to use the spray pack degreaser or kero and a brush i know which way is easiest.

get a can of bellray lube its good stuff and you can see when to apply more, i use a big chunk of bubblewrap that something came packed in and stick that between the bike and the chain and spray away till its got a good coat on it.

When the nice white lube is looking like gunk its time to clean and reapply.

doesnt happen often enough these days.

Ohh the belray lube doesnt fling up your back and all over your wheels like some do maxima wax is good stuff too.

I bought the motol spray on clear, it sticks well, put it on when the chain is warm after a blip. I don't bother to clean it as I figure any heavy crap will get flung off going up the first freeway onramp. Besides, why bother, it will covered in road grit within the first 50km anyway. I lube it every 250km, just a light spray from directly behind the rear cog as I turn the wheel in the *drive* direction

I clean mine with kero...does an awesome job...ask bonester he thought my chain was new. Stuff using a toothbrush, I used chux, worked brilliantly. I use Motul Chain lube, white waxxy stuff in a can. I usually apply every 350-400km (once a week, Saturday morning job) with bike on centre stand just spray towards the stand just to avoid the tyre.

I will have to try the bubble wrap trick too, my centre stand is a waxxy bugger now...anything I can do to prevent it is a good thing.

I fond the only part that gets dirty on my chain is the inside that you rarely see, and damn does it get some serious shit caked up.

Just make sure you remember that you need all your fingers and thumbs after you are finished!!!! Will save me looking at pictures of gumby missing digits after its all done.

haha yea i hit it with degreaser, then wash it off and re lube it..try to do it when its warm as it will stick better...to a warm chain i mean...

and get a bike lube (i use motul also) as they are designed for the purpose...

i use chainsaw oil, seems to last far longer and stick to the chain a lot better. plus its $16 for 4L of the stuff.

i have white wheels and have never washed them in the time ive owned the bike (since mid november) and i would say that the back wheel isnt a hell of a lot dirtier than the front... you can still see some white on both rims

i have purple wheels on mine and i was shocked when i touched the mags with a wet cloth and the brake dust just melted off, the wheels look like BRAND new i am EXTREMELY happy with it!!!

To save the lube or chain wax getting all over your tyre, try this:

1. Take a box of glad-wrap, alfoil or similar product.

2. Remove roll of glad-wrap or other product (or alternatively, wait until you've finished a roll and just use that box).

3. Remove any metal cutting edge.

4. Open box up at the seams and press it out flat.

5. Standing side on at your bike, slip the folded-out box in between the chain and the back wheel.

6. Keeping pulling the folded-out box around so it comes up and out over the top of the chain.

7. The pre-exising folds in the box will create a perfectly fitted guard on all sides of your chain.

8. Lube away and you'll get no overspray on tyres, wheels or your swing arm.

9. If you're using a centre stand or race stand and your bike is in neutral, you can rotate the rear wheel to expose un-lubed chain without having to remove the folded-out box.

Easy.

i just cleaned it with kero then and wow the bike has some bling bling now!!! as for lube i just went along each side of the chain and oiled her up, aswell as went along the eyelets with oil!! top and bottom sides of the chain!
