Rattling motor.

Me beloved Z750 is only a couple of motnhs old with just over 3000km on the odo. My question relates to the motor. Sounds quiet as a mouse when idling cold (due I guess to thick oil) but when she warms up she makes a kind of tappety noise that I can hear. Its not hugely loud just noticeable. Is this normal? Its my fist 4cyl water cooled bike and Im a wee bit paranoid. Heaps of oil and she has had her first service.

Kawasakis have always been one of the noisier engines so I wouldn't stress yet. You'll be up for a valve check at 12000ks and most are fine and don't need adjusting then. Just keep make sure the oil level is right and have a listen to another one, you'll probly find its the same...

Naked's appear to make more noise than fully faired bikes too, as you can get right up close and personal to the source.

Listen to one or two others like Dave suggested and you'll probably realise it's fine.

(I remember when my ex bought her GPX250 new many years ago and before she could ride off, I had the service manager out listening to it as I thought it was throwing a big end. He started another one up for me to hear and it was the same. Engine noises cause paranoia )

Hey mate, I don't have a Z750 but I have a low km 05 636 and it makes a tappety noise, but it's the cam chain tensioner, just a thought for you. I bumped into a pretty cool trick on another forum for tightening up slack chain tensioners very easily, but proceed at your own risk!

"when the engine is running the cam chain whips the tensioiner (chains don't wear evenly), which is the noise you are hearing. The spring pressure isn't enough for the tensioner to adjust to the loose part of the chain because the chain is spinning too fast....but you don't want too much spring pressure because it will wear the chain slippers prematurely....... wanna know a really easy way to adjust it...........fully warm your bike up, put it on a rear stand, put the gearbox in 6th(engine off!)....grab the rear wheel & roll it over 2-3 times...it takes some muscle, but it will allow the cam chain to turn slow enough for the tensioner to adjust to the loosest part of the chain."

That's might be a bit confusing, so in summary:

1. warm up
2. shift into 6th
3. turn motor off
4. with clutch out roll forward a few metres

PS don't overfill the oil or you'll risk real damage to the engine

you think yours is bad.
Mine sounds like a truck motor, tappety and noisy.

Thanks Richb, Ill give it a try. I think Im just bloody paranoid, you know how it is with a new baby. Whats that sound? Ohh and that rattle at 7000rpm? Ohhh its the plastic key fob vibrating against the head stock.....
